This year’s Toronto International Film Festival is working under different conditions, mainly the dueling strikes between SAG-AFTRA and the WGA. That’s left many movies working without their stars and directors. But, regardless, it’s still been a star-studded ceremony with several performers — working under interim agreements from SAG-AFTRA — arriving to promote their projects.
The Toronto Film Festival is a mix of heavy-hitting awards contenders and features for sale. Films that people are already discussing include Craig Gillespie’s “Dumb Money,” Anna Kendrick’s “Woman of the Hour” and

The Italian services sector contracted marginally for a second month running in September, a survey showed on Wednesday, signalling ongoing weakness in the euro zone's third largest economy. The HCOB Purchasing Managers' Index (PMI) for Italian services came in at 49.9 in September, virtually unchanged from 49.8 in August, and still fractionally below the 50 level that separates growth from contraction. The result was broadly as expected, with a Reuters survey of 15 analysts pointing to a figure of 50.0.
Sweden's Royal Academy of Sciences appeared to have inadvertently published names of three scientists it said had won this year's Nobel Prize in chemistry, although the award-giving institute said the decision was still hours away. Swedish newspaper Aftonbladet published a copy of an email its said was from the academy naming the laureates as Moungi G. Bawendi, Louis E. Brus and Alexei I. Ekimov. "The Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 2023 rewards the discovery and development of quantum dots, nanoparticles that are so small that their size determines their properties," Dagens Nyheter (DN), another Swedish daily, quoted an email from the academy as saying.
Television is awash with sports documentaries that, on closer inspection, turn out to be puff pieces. The problem is that in a world ruled by comms managers and optics czars, most of these documentaries have to make a Faustian pact in order to be made at all. To get access to the hallowed celebrity or the legendary team, the documentary makers must make them appear more hallowed or legendary.
UBS is trying to attract customers with above-market rates on deposits, according to people familiar with the bank's activities, as it seeks to boost inflows after taking over stricken peer Credit Suisse. Clients who deposit their cash at Credit Suisse, now a unit of UBS, earn around 1.8% on upwards of 50,000 Swiss francs ($54,000) held for three months, according to one of the people, who asked to remain anonymous because the matter is private. At Zuercher Kantonalbank, similar deposits with a mininum investment of 100,000 francs receive interest of 1.34% and at Raiffeisen they earn 1.2%, spokespeople for the two banks said.
