1. Pension funds crisis forces £65bn bailout by Bank

Britain’s pension funds were on Wednesday at the centre of the financial crisis sparked by the mini-budget forcing the Bank of England to launch a £65 billion emergency bailout.

The Bank warned of a “material risk to UK financial stability” and stepped in to buy long-term gilts, as plunging markets for UK debt sent borrowing costs spiralling and forced pension funds to dump their assets. Read the full story.

2. No room for Queen Elizabeth II statue on Trafalgar Square’s Fourth Plinth, rules Sadiq Khan

A statue of Queen Elizabeth II will not be placed on Trafalgar Square’s Fourth Plinth in the foreseeable future, Sadiq Khan’s office has said.

Since the death of the Queen there have been calls for a monument to be erected on the empty plinth in the centre of London, which has been used as a platform for contemporary artworks since 1999. Read the full story.

3. Russian forces on brink of encirclement in Donetsk town

Russian forces in the Donetsk region town of Lyman are on the brink of encirclement following Ukrainian gains to their north and east, pro-Russian military bloggers have said.

The claims could not be immediately verified, but the reported Ukrainian gains appeared to match images and videos released on social media by Ukrainian soldiers. Read the full story.

4. Prince Harry and Meghan hire bodyguard with history of domestic abuse

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex were protected during their visit to Britain by a bodyguard who has been convicted of domestic violence.

5. Joe Biden asks if dead congresswoman is in crowd during speech

Joe Biden baffled an audience at the White House Wednesday night when he asked if a late congresswoman, who died in a car crash last month, was present.
