Triangle weather warning expires, but next few days will see far lower temperatures

The cold front that brought severe weather to the Triangle Saturday afternoon will usher in dramatically lower temperatures overnight, and cooler weather for the next several days.

Temperatures in Raleigh are expected to drop at least 20 degrees Saturday, from a high of 84 in the early afternoon to the low 60s by 9 p.m. Overnight, temperatures will fall to a low of 47 degrees, the National Weather Service said.

Raleigh will continue to see temperatures in the low 40s on Monday and Tuesday mornings, NWS Raleigh lead meteorologist Michael Strickler told The News & Observer Friday.

The drop in temperatures comes after the NWS issued a warning of thunderstorms and gusty winds Saturday afternoon for Wake and surrounding counties in the Triangle. The warning was issued just before 3:30 p.m. and expired an hour later.

Winds in excess of 40 mph were expected to impact Raleigh, Durham, Cary, Apex, Sanford, Garner, Fuquay-Varina, Zebulon, Angier, and Raleigh-Durham International Airport, the NWS said in a special weather statement.

The storm did not cause widespread power outages, but about 330 customers in a neighborhood next to Highway 401 near Garner were without power at 5 p.m. Duke Energy expects power to be restored by 6:30 p.m., according to its outage map.
