Three-star athlete joins TCU’s Top 25 recruiting class

TCU added another commitment to its Top 25 recruiting class Friday afternoon.

Three-star Max Carroll became the 19th recruit to join what’s becoming an impressive class for new head coach Sonny Dykes. Carroll committed to TCU at a ceremony at his high school Briarcrest Christian near Memphis.

“With how hard they pushed for me and everything that Coach (Anthony) Jones and Coach (Joe) Gillespie did for me have done for me. I just felt like it was home, like it was the place to be,” Carroll said about his decision.

Carroll is a three-star athlete and plays various position for the Saints. The 247Sports composite rankings list Carroll as the No. 601 prospect overall and the No. 18 prospect in Tennessee.

Listed at 6-3, 205 pounds Carroll projects as a potential linebacker for the Horned Frogs. Carroll had 35 receptions, 525 yards and eight touchdowns for Briarcrest as a junior. He was also fourth on the team with 38 tackles.

Carroll is confident he’ll be able to adjust to life on and off the field at TCU.

“With the position I’ll be playing I can just roam the field in free space and man up on the tight end. In Fort Worth, I feel like there are a lot of opportunities to relax and chill and just make sure I’m good,” Carroll said.

Carroll cut his list down to five finalists of TCU, Texas A&M, Vanderbilt, Michigan and Alabama State on June 17. TCU and Vanderbilt eventually emerged as the two finalists.

Carroll visited TCU at the end for July for RiffRam day and that seemed the be the key point in Carroll settling on the Horned Frogs.

He previously cited his relationship with current running backs coach Anthony Jones as a big reason his interest was so high in TCU. Jones recruited Carroll while he was at Memphis and used that familiarity to help the Horned Frogs move up quickly in Carroll’s recruitment.

“We have a close relationship. He’s one of my favorite coaches. He’s a cool guy, he’s somebody I can talk to whenever I want to,” Carroll said.
