Three Midlands girls golf teams win SC state qualifying tournaments

Three Midlands girls golf teams won state qualifying tournaments on Monday.

Top-ranked Blythewood won the Class 5A Upper State championship while Chapin won the 5A Lower State championship. Top-ranked and defending state champion Gilbert won the Class 3A Lower State championship.

Blythewood, the No 1 ranked team in the state, continued its dominating season by shooting a 7-under 281 at Chester Golf Course. Dorman was second with 303. Blythewood’s Caroline Hawkins and Paige Paolucci each shot 3-under 69 to earn medalist honors. Ella Stalvey shot 1-under 71 and Elzabeth Maddon shot an even par 72.

In the Class 5A Lower State championship at Shaftesbury Glen Golf and Fish Club, Chapin shot a 303 to win by 16 shots over Wando. Defending state champion was third with 323.

St. James’ Adrian Anderson shot a 6-under 66 to earn medalist honors. Chapin’s Emily Baker was second with 4-under 68. The Eagles’ Lily Reed was fifth at a 1-under 71. Mia Andrade and Lexington Isabella Rawl tie for 6th with 73. River Bluff’s Mina Gencoguz was tied for eighth and the Gators qualified with a sixth-place finish.

Gilbert won the 3A Lower State championship at Cheraw State Park. The Indians shot a 326 to win by four strokes over Aynor. Gilbert’s Kennedy Gooding was runner-up after shooting 76. Edie Raine Hardee shot an 80.

AC Flora finished second at the Class 4A Upper State championship at the Links at Stoney Point in Greenwood. The Falcons shot a 353, three shots back of Pickens. Travelers Rest’s Kristin Strandell (78) was medalist. ACF’s Sarah Campbell Brown (84) was sixth, and Merritt Barbrey (86) was eighth.

The state championships will be Monday-Tuesday at various sites. The Class 5A tournament will be at the Country Club of South Carolina in Florence. The Class 4A tournament is at Crescent Pointe Golf in Bluffton and 3A is at the Hackler Course in Conway.
