This Is What The Revenant Bear Looked Like On Set

Anyone who’s seen Leonardo DiCaprio’s big Oscar contender ‘The Revenant’ will know the movie’s big stand out scene is the bear attack.

DiCaprio’s fur trapper Hugh Glass is mauled by a huge bear and left for dead in an unflinchingly brutal sequence that feels so real you can almost smell the bear’s breath as it ravages poor Leo.

Obviously, the bear isn’t real and the sequence was achieved on screen using a combination of visual effects tricks including wires, and a man in blue suit pretending to be the bear.

ET Canada has an interview with veteran stunt man Glenn Ennis who helped ‘The Revenant’ achieve the bear on screen. The 6ft 4 actor says he watched hours of wildlife footage and videos of real bear attacks in order to move like a wild bear.

“If you notice the bear head in the picture, they wanted the bear mouth to be right on his lower back,” Ennis says. “I was supposed to grab his jacket with my hand to make it look like the bear’s jaws were pulling it. In order to have the bear’s jaw in the small of his back, basically my face was in his butt. My face was in Leo’s butt for a fair bit of time. I can see how that’s someone’s fantasy, but it wasn’t mine!”
