A third police officer has died as a result of shooting in Eastern Kentucky

A third police officer who was involved in a shooting in Floyd County Thursday night has died.

Prestonsburg police said Canine Handler Jacob R. Chaffins died Friday.

The police department announced his death in a Facebook post late Friday night, saying, “You have dedicated your short time on this earth to the service of the citizens of Prestonsburg and the Commonwealth as an EMT, Fire Fighter, and Police Officer. You further dedicated yourself to the security of our country as a valiant soldier.

The lives you’ve saved since you even started policing are innumerable, and that’s how you gave your life - saving another. We will shine your light to Paisley and the world so long as we breathe.

Rest yourself, we have the watch.”

Kentucky State Police said in a news release providing more information about the officers Saturday that Chaffins had been in law enforcement for three years. He had a wife and daughter, Prestonsburg Mayor Les Stapleton said in an earlier Facebook post.

Two other law enforcement officers, Prestonsburg Police Captain Ralph Frasure and Floyd County Sheriff’s Deputy William Petry, were also killed in the shooting, along with a police dog, Drago.

Frasure had worked for the Prestonsburg Police Department since 1983, state police said. Petry, who had been with the sheriff’s office for two years, was a retired state trooper, former Prestonsburg police officer and the fire chief for the city of Martin, the sheriff’s office said.

Four other officers and one civilian were injured in the incident, state police said Saturday. They said two of the injured officers are in stable condition in the hospital, and one has been released. The civilian is also still hospitalized, state police said.

In a Facebook post Saturday afternoon, the Floyd County Sheriff’s Office asked for prayers for the families of those who died, as well as for the injured.

“Please keep our Deputy Darrin Lawson in your thoughts and prayers as he recovers. Keep Constable Gary Wolfe and Floyd EM Director Joe Reynolds in your prayers as well and just pray for peace and comfort for everyone that was affected by this tragedy,” the post stated.

Kristy Goble said her father, Reynolds, is the emergency management director for Floyd County and serves as assistant fire chief for the Allen Fire Department. She said in a Facebook post that he was among those shot Thursday night.

“He was there to help those injured as my daddy always does,” Goble wrote.

She wrote that Reynolds had surgery Friday “to see the damage to his eye” and will need a second surgery in a few weeks, “to remove the remaining part of eye.”

“We continue to pray for everyone else that was involved and are facing the aftermath of this senseless tragedy,” Goble wrote. “Hug your family tonight a little tighter, we are never ever promised another day with those we love.”

Police have said Lance Storz, 49, of Allen, opened fire without warning on officers who arrived at his home to serve an emergency protective order.

Storz is being held in the Pike County Detention Center on charges including murder, attempted murder and assault on a service animal.
