Things get personal between Ted Cruz and Chris Cuomo during fiery interview

Ted Cruz and Chris Cuomo took part in a contentious interview during ‘Cuomo Prime Time’ on Wednesday night. When asked about the federal response to the COVID-19 pandemic, Cruz chose to deflect and instead discuss New York’s response to the pandemic. Chris Cuomo’s brother, Andrew Cuomo is the governor of New York. Chris ultimately challenged him why he kept discussing a state governor. “Why don't you talk to the president like you talk to my brother?” asked Chris Cuomo. “Are you afraid he’ll smack you down at home like he did in primaries?” Confused, Cruz sarcastically replied, “Oh yeah, I’m scared of the Cuomos.” Chris Cuomo fired back, “I’m talking about the president. My brother's not the president. I’m talking about the president -- the one who calls you a liar. The one that said your wife is ugly. That guy.”

CHRIS CUOMO: That's why we got so sick here.

TED CRUZ: Does it trouble you at all that New York and New Jersey had the highest death rates in the country?

CHRIS CUOMO: Of course!

TED CRUZ: Does that make you pause and say, gosh--

CHRIS CUOMO: It all troubles me, Ted. And to watch guys like you stand by and stroke your beard is like a wise man instead of telling the president to get on it when you have power--

TED CRUZ: Chris, how about tell your brother to get on it.

CHRIS CUOMO: My brother will stand for his own record.

KYLIE MAR: Texas senator Ted Cruz appeared on "Cuomo Prime Time" Wednesday, and the interview quickly became contentious after Cruz attacked Chris Cuomo's brother, New York Governor Andrew Cuomo, for his state's response to being the first COVID-19 hot spot.

CHRIS CUOMO: Why don't you talk to the president the way you talk to my brother, Ted? You afraid of him? You think he'll smack you down at home?

TED CRUZ: Oh yeah, I'm terrified of the Cuomos--

CHRIS CUOMO: Like he's showing you up in the primary?

TED CRUZ: --you guys are really tough.

CHRIS CUOMO: Not the Cuomos. I'm talking about the president. My brother's not the president. I'm talking about the president. The one who called you a liar. The one who said your wife is ugly. That guy.

KYLIE MAR: Cruz initially campaigned against Trump in the 2016 presidential election before ultimately endorsing him, despite the future president mocking him, his wife, and his father. But on Wednesday, Cruz didn't feel like endorsing Trump's response to the pandemic. So he went after Andrew's.

TED CRUZ: When the death rates are markedly worse in some states than others, we should ask a reasonable question.

CHRIS CUOMO: Yeah, why didn't the president help sooner? That's the question. Why didn't the president help sooner?

KYLIE MAR: This was Cruz's first appearance on "Cuomo Prime Time," and judging from the fireworks, quite possibly his last.

TED CRUZ: You know, I'm glad you take tips on insults from-- from-- from other folks.

CHRIS CUOMO: Really? Am I insulting you, sir?

TED CRUZ: Oh yeah. Oh yeah, you are. And you're enjoying it.

CHRIS CUOMO: I am not enjoying it at all. I'm not enjoying anything about this, except having an opportunity for you to say the right thing at the right time.
