Thandiwe Newton's new movie God's Country lands rare 100% Rotten Tomatoes rating

Westworld star Thandiwe Newton's new movie God's Country has landed rave reviews, earning a rare 100% Rotten Tomatoes rating.

The movie, which has premiered at the 2022 Sundance Film Festival, sees the actress take on the role of a grieving college professor as she is drawn into an increasingly intense battle of wills when two hunters trespass on her property.

Going by the early reception from critics who have watched the movie, God's Country is certainly one to add to our lists.

In a B+ review for IndieWire, Christian Zilko praises director Julian Higgins' "excellent film", saying it "constantly dangles redemption in front of our faces, begging us to imagine a better world, but ultimately delivers a stark reminder of how bitterly divided the country is".

Newton also "delivers one of the best performances of her career", while Screen Daily's Fionnuala Halligan echoes that sentiment by suggesting the star is "sure to draw universal acclaim for her powerhouse portrayal".

"God's Country is a film from new voices, bristling with ambition," she adds.

"Methodically paced and dominated by negative emotions all around, director/co-writer Julian Higgins takes his own sweet time exploring the troubling, unfriendly mindsets on both sides of the fence," Deadline's Todd McCarthy adds.

The Hollywood Reporter's Lovia Gyarkye adds: "Crisp, steady shots of snow-powdered mountainous terrain sustain us. And a brash, violent feud traps us, making it impossible to look away from this often exhilarating, if occasionally overcooked, film."

Newton is probably best known for playing Maeve Millay in HBO's Westworld, and has appeared in the likes of Line of Duty and Solo: A Star Wars Story in recent years.
