Texas nuclear waste facility gets final environmental study

July 29 (Reuters) - The U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) on Thursday issued a final environmental impact statement for Interim Storage Partners' license application to construct an interim storage facility for spent nuclear fuel in Andrews County, Texas.

After considering the environmental impacts, the NRC said its staff recommend granting the proposed license to Interim Storage Partners (ISP), a joint venture between Waste Control Specialists and Orano CIS.

The license, if granted, would authorize ISP to construct a facility to store up to 5,000 metric tons of spent commercial nuclear fuel and Greater-Than-Class C waste for a period of 40 years.

In a release, the U.S. nuclear regulator said it would provide the final environmental impact statement to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).

The NRC must wait at least 30 days before issuing a licensing decision once the EPA publishes a notice in the Federal Register that it has received the document, it added. (Reporting by Swati Verma in Bengaluru; Editing by Cynthia Osterman)
