Leeds United legend Terry Cooper has died at the age of 77.

The former left-back was one of the stalwarts of the Leeds team during the club’s most memorable era under manager Don Revie in the 1960s and 70s, making 351 appearances in total.

Cooper scored the only goal of the game with a volley as the Whites beat Arsenal at the old Wembley Stadium to claim League Cup success in 1968, while he was a key part of the team that won the First Division title in 1968-69.

The defender - who notched 11 goals in total for Leeds - later played for Middlesbrough, Bristol City, Bristol Rovers and Doncaster, while he also won 20 senior caps for England between 1969-74, playing at the 1970 World Cup in Mexico.

Cooper was player-manager at both Bristol clubs and twice coached Exeter, where he won the Fourth Division title in 1990, in addition to a stint in charge at Birmingham and later a scouting role with Southampton.

“Leeds United is devastated to learn of the passing of Terry Cooper. Our thoughts are with Terry’s family and friends at this difficult time,” Leeds said on Saturday night.

A tweet from the official England account read: “We’re deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Terry Cooper at the age of 77. Cooper won 20 caps for the #ThreeLions between 1969 and 1974.

“All of our thoughts are with Terry’s family, friends and former clubs.”

Exeter said: “Exeter City is deeply saddened to hear of the passing of Terry Cooper at the age of 77.

“Terry managed the Grecians to the Fourth Division championship in 1990. Our thoughts are with Terry’s friends and family.”

Bristol City tweeted: “Bristol City is devastated to learn of the passing of former player and manager Terry Cooper.

“Our thoughts are with Terry’s family and friends at this difficult time. A true City legend.”

Birmingham said: “We are devastated to hear of the passing of our former Manager, Terry Cooper. Everyone’s thoughts at #BCFC are with Terry’s family and friends.”
