Take a Terrifying Tour of the Real-Life Horror Movie Houses

In the 2008 Swedish vampire movie, Oskar is a social outcast who finds refuge with a new neighbor, an unusually pale girl of the same age. Their apartments are real ones in Lulea, Sweden.

The title house from the 2009 horror flick starring Jocelin Donahue as the unwitting victim of devil worship and Greta Gerwig as her bestie was actually a secluded Victorian home in rural Lime Rock, Connecticut. In real-life, it’s an attorney’s office.

This 2007 Spanish horror film about a haunted former children’s home was filmed at the Partarríu manor in Llanes, Spain. The gorgeous-yet-ghoulish structure was spot-on, and the location also offered surrounding beaches, caves, and cliffs.

You may not want to ever watch this infamously disgusting 2009 movie, but you can still visit the real-life Dutch villa where the German scientist Dr. Heiter orchestrated his dastardly deeds. It’s in Het Gooi in the central part of the Netherlands. Filmmakers had to devise ways to hide the neighboring houses from the camera’s view.

A string of shocking, unexplained deaths happen at a deluxe vacation home in this 2011 scary movie. In reality, the mansion is located in Columbia, Missouri, just off the sixth hole of the Columbia Country Club’s golf course. Crew members are said to have uncovered hidden liquor cabinets built into the walls of the house, which was built in 1927 during Prohibition.

The freaky doll did her evil deeds in a few Southern California locations in this 2014 spinoff of ‘The Conjuring.’ Among them were two houses in Santa Monica and a Pasadena apartment (all pictured).

The Victorian-style house in the creepy 2014 movie — about a single mother and her son’s fear of a sinister monster — was built especially for the movie. But the elderly neighbor’s home (pictured) is real and located in Adelaide, Australia.

The anxious protagonist of this 2015 atmospheric horror movie did a lot of her stewing, screaming, and running at this real home in Sterling Heights, Michigan.

In the 2013 movie, Ethan Hawke and Lena Heady (pictured, right) play a wealthy family of the future who are held hostage in their palatial home during a 12-hour lawless period where murder goes unpunished. The house, located in a gated community in Chatsworth, California, has real-life occupants. Let’s hope they have better luck than their movie counterparts.

The first in a string of these found-footage films was shot in 2007. The real-life location of the original ‘Paranormal Activity’ haunting is located in a San Diego suburb. The house has four bedrooms, 2.5 baths, and was recently listed for sale for $749,000.

The third supernatural horror film in the ‘Insidious’ series was shot at a Los Angeles apartment (pictured), however most of the interior shots of the 2015 film were done inside a studio in nearby Sylmar, California.

This 2012 movie centers on a true-crime writer (Ethan Hawke) who unearths a box of haunted home movies in his attic. His house is a real one, located on Long Island, New York.

Part of the ramp-up to the release of this 2015 remake was a fake house listing for “1295 Brimstone Ave” in the Willow Point housing community “just outside the city.” In the film, the city is fictional, but the house used in it really exists — in Hamilton, Ontario.
