Falling asteroid lights up sky in Russia's remote Yakutia
The emergencies ministry in Yakutia said all official bodies had been placed on alert as the asteroid approached but that no damage had been reported after its descent. The European Space Agency, writing on X, said the asteroid was believed to have measured 70 cm (28 inches) across and was spotted about 12 hours in advance of its appearance in the sky. It said it entered the atmosphere at 1.15 a.m. local time (1615 GMT).

Oil rises on fears about Lebanon, further OPEC+ supply cuts
Oil prices rose more than 2% on Tuesday as Israel threatened to attack the Lebanese state if its truce with Hezbollah collapses, and as investors positioned for OPEC+ to announce an extension of supply cuts this week. U.S. West Texas Intermediate crude futures rose by $1.71, or 2.5%, to $69.81 per barrel. Israeli forces have continued strikes against what they say are Hezbollah fighters ignoring last week's truce agreement in Lebanon.

South Korea's President Yoon says he will scrap martial law
SEOUL (Reuters) -South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol said on Wednesday he would lift a martial law declaration he had imposed just hours before, backing down in a standoff with parliament which rejected his attempt to ban political activity and censor the media. Yoon declared martial law on Tuesday night to thwart "anti-state forces" among his opponents. Yonhap news agency said the cabinet had agreed early on Wednesday to scrap the martial law.

Ohio's top elections official rejects GOP challenge to Democratic congresswoman's residency
Ohio's top elections official has rejected a Republican challenge over the legal residency of one of the state's Democratic members of Congress. Secretary of State Frank LaRose made the decision late last week, saying the complainant brought by a political activist did not provide “clear and convincing” proof that Rep. Emilia Sykes had relocated from Akron to her husband's home in Columbus. The decision was left to LaRose after the Summit County Board of Elections tied 2-2 along party lines on Oct. 24 on whether the challenge should be taken up.

South Korea lifts president's martial law decree after lawmakers vote against it
South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol’s government early Wednesday lifted the martial law he imposed during a tense night of political drama in which troops surrounded parliament and lawmakers voted to reject military rule. Yoon said his government withdrew military personnel following a bipartisan parliamentary vote that rejected martial law, and the measure was formally lifted around 4:30 a.m. during a Cabinet meeting. Yoon declared martial law late Tuesday, vowing to eliminate “anti-state” forces as he struggles against an opposition that controls the country’s parliament and that he accuses of sympathizing with communist North Korea.

The South Carolina House opened its newest session Tuesday with an unsuccessful long shot challenge of the Speaker that could be a preview of fighting among Republicans over which group truly deserves to identify as conservative. House Speaker Murrell Smith was elected to a second two-year term by a 102-17 vote as the Republicans' Freedom Caucus tried to show its strength. The Freedom Caucus said most Republicans aren't conservative enough because they gave tax breaks to corporations, failed to pass a total abortion ban and let Democrats, who have only 35 of the body's 124 seats, run a few subcommittees.

Trial begins for a man charged in the killing of a University of Mississippi student
A University of Mississippi student who disappeared in 2022 was a happy person who spoke with his mother daily and called her every year to sing happy birthday, his mom testified Tuesday in the trial of the man charged with killing her son. Stephanie Lee of Jackson, Mississippi, said her 20-year-old son, Jimmy “Jay” Lee, texted her at about 2 a.m. on July 8, 2022, to wish her a happy birthday. Sheldon “Timothy” Herrington Jr. of Grenada, Mississippi, is charged with capital murder in the death of Jay Lee, who was last seen alive in Oxford hours after he sent the birthday text to his mother.
