Teen from Kansas turns back the clock with Patsy Cline performance on ‘The Voice’

A teenager from Kansas performed a 60-year-old timeless classic on “The Voice,” leaving two coaches fighting over her.

The four coaches on the show sat back and listened for a full minute as Daysia performed Patsy Cline’s “Crazy,” but the husband and wife duo of Blake Shelton and Gwen Stefani turned their chairs for the singer from Leavenworth.

When the coaches got a look at Daysia during the blind audition that aired on Monday, Oct. 3, they were surprised to see it was not a grown adult in front of them, but rather a high schooler.

“I just thought you had an incredible voice and you look like a star. I feel great about you, and that’s half of it,” said Shelton, who later added he was “intimidated” by the uniqueness of the teen singer.

As Stefani gave her pitch to Daysia, the former “No Doubt” singer said there was no one on her team like her.

“I love the quality in your voice,” Stefani said. “You can do all the runs, but you also want to just tell a story and speak from your heart.”

Daysia chose Stefani, who later tweeted she was pretty sure she “just scored the winner of #TheVoice.”

A viewing party was held Monday at Leavenworth Senior High School, where Daysia attends.

“I never in a million years would have imagined that this would happen for me,” she told KSHB before the party. “My friends and family are here, everyone from across town are here, you’re here, I’m just so excited.”

Originally from Hampton, Virginia, Daysia and her twin sister moved to Kansas when they were 12 to live with their great aunt and uncle after their mother was run over and killed.

“Her uncle owns and operates a jazz lounge where Daysia started singing sporadically about two years ago. She now gets a whole night to perform every week,” according to her contestant profile. “Though Daysia is only 17, with one year left of school, she’s ready to fulfill her dream of being a professional singer.”
