New tech lets you pay for food at Texas Rangers games without ever taking out your wallet

Texas Rangers fans can visit two new concession stands at Globe Life Field this season to buy food without ever taking out their wallet.

Thursday is opening day for the Rangers, where they’ll face off against the Philadelphia Phillies at 3:05 p.m. As of Monday, around 1,000 tickets are still available for those wanting to catch the Rangers season and home opener.

Rangers staff and their concession company, Delaware North, were on hand Monday to demonstrate how Amazon’s Just Walk Out technology will be implemented at Globe Life Field, the first sports venue in Dallas-Fort Worth to utilize it.

“The whole goal is is that you walk in and walk out without having to see a cashier, without having to bring your wallet out, without having to wait on a receipt,” said Casey Rapp, Delaware North’s general manager at Globe Life Field. “Everything’s done.”

How Amazon’s Just Walk Out technology will work at Globe Life Field

Rapp and former Ranger Ian Kinsler demonstrated Monday how the technology will work at both Express Grill locations in sections 108 and 124.

  • Upon arriving at the concession stand, shoppers can swipe their credit card or palm if they’re an Amazon One user. Then shoppers can choose from cheeseburgers, hot dogs, bratwurst, sodas, beers and other items, by simply grabbing them off the shelf and walking out of the area.

  • When leaving the area with food in hand, the shopper’s credit card or Amazon account will be charged for any items they picked up at the Express Grill, Rapp said.

  • The Just Walk Out technology utilizes cameras to track users while in the shopping area, charging them for the items they picked up when exiting.

  • If someone picked up a hot dog and then put it back on the shelf, they wouldn’t be charged for it, Rapp said. Additionally, the technology can register family and friends so one person isn’t trying to grab enough grub for an entire group.

“So, depending upon what you’re getting, you’re talking 30 to 60 seconds to walk through the entire thing instead of waiting in line,” Rapp said.

Just Walk Out technology is already in use at dozens of physical Amazon stores across the country and Climate Pledge Arena, which works with Delaware North.

The Seattle arena was one of the first sports venues to utilize the technology so Delaware North was familiar with its use, Rapp said. When it came time for the Rangers to find new ways to speed up service at concession stands, everything fell into place.

“We kind of came together and we said, ‘Hey, let’s do this,’” Rapp said.

Rangers fans can test out the Just Walk Out technology at Express Grill locations in sections 108 and 124. Both spots will have Delaware North employees nearby to help with any shopper assistance.

The food lineup at Globe Life Field this season has a few notable additions: from the 2-foot long “boomstick burger” to a brisket croissant.
