TCU’s wide receivers impress coaches during second spring football practice

TCU has quickly implemented new offensive coordinator Ken Briles’ philosophies into their football playbook.

“Our playbook is probably a little bigger now than it has been,” TCU head coach Sonny Dykes said after practice Wednesday. “A very similar kinda approach, maybe more of an emphasis on tempo than there has been in the past. We’ll continue to install it for about five or six days.”

Dykes brought in Briles to replace Garrett Riley, who left the Horned Frogs to become the offensive coordinator at Clemson.

Dykes said that TCU had success using an up-tempo offense last season. He said he thinks the Horned Frogs can benefit from more up-tempo football in 2023.

Other notes from the Horned Frogs second day of practice:

Wide receiver depth

It was a good day for TCU pass catchers, especially Alabama transfer Jojo Earle and sophomore Jordan Hudson. Earle and Hudson ran good routes and made nice catches throughout the practice.

“When you sit down and you look at JoJo and Major [Everhart], John Paul [Richardson] and Jordan [Hudson] ... that group all of sudden is dynamic and there’s guys that have played a lot of football,” said Dykes, “I’ve been really pleased with what I’ve seen.”

Not doing too much

Chandler Morris is the presumed starting quarterback for the Horned Frogs and he has the chance to be a game-changer. Morris has impressed Dykes through two practices.

“The big thing with Chandler, I think, is just learning not to do too much,” Dykes said. “I think that one of the things that is great about Chandler is he wants to please and he wants to be a guy that makes plays and he wants to be a major contributor to winning a ball game. Sometimes the most important job you can do as a quarterback is just to do your job and not try to do too much I think he’s learning that.”

Offensive line replacements

After losing All-American Steve Avila, All-Big-12 honoree Alan Ali and sixth-year senior Wes Harris, TCU will have three new starters on the offensive line this season. TCU does retain several starters from last season’s vaunted group.

“I think Steve [Avila] was one of the elite leaders of our team last year. The great thing is having [Andrew] Coker back and [Brandon] Coleman bac.,” said Dykes, “We feel good about those guys and then we’ll kinda see how the inside works out. I’m encouraged by what I’ve seen so far but again we’re just getting started.”

TCU’s spring practices will continue on Friday and Saturday at 8 a.m. and continue for the next four weeks, leading up to the spring game on April 14 at 7 p.m.
