TCU encourages fans to attend grand entrance for new football coach tonight

TCU has big plans to introduce its next football coach.

The school announced a news conference for a “major announcement regarding the TCU football program” at 10 a.m. Tuesday in the Legends Club & Suites at Amon G. Carter Stadium. As the Star-Telegram reported Sunday, the news conference is to formally introduce Sonny Dykes as the next football coach.

TCU then spread word of a grand entrance to welcome Dykes to campus tonight. Fans are encouraged to attend the festivities at 5:30 p.m. tonight at Amon G. Carter Stadium.

The school has not named Dykes as its next coach in any of the releases but he is has reached a deal with the school, sources said.

Dykes, 52, joins TCU after spending the last four years at SMU. Prior to taking over the Mustangs, Dykes served as an offensive analyst at TCU in 2017 under Patterson. He had previous head coaching stops at Louisiana Tech (2010-12) and Cal (2013-16).

Dykes went 30-18 in four seasons at SMU, including 19 weeks of being ranked in the top 25. The Mustangs also ranked among the country’s top offenses. SMU closed the regular season ranked 13th in total offense. It had the 12th-best offense in 2020 and the ninth-best in 2019.

TCU hopes it becomes known for its offense under Dykes like it became known for defense under Patterson.

Patterson leaves a lasting legacy at the school. He already has a statue on campus and finished his career as the all-time winningest coach with a 181-79 record over 21 seasons.

Dykes’ career record is 71-62 over 12 seasons.
