Myanmar says 2024 census shows population of 51.3 million
Myanmar said its 2024 census found a population of 51.3 million, slightly smaller than 10 years ago, as the junta prepares for promised elections amid ongoing conflict and unrest across the country, state media reported on Wednesday. The census, which was held in October, will be used to compile voter lists for the elections planned for this year that opposition groups have widely condemned as a sham. "I am striving to successfully organise a free and fair election, which is the ultimate goal of the State Administration Council," junta chief Min Aung Hlaing said in his New Year speech that was published in state media.

As of Tuesday night more, more than 12 hours after residents woke up without power, about 23% of customers on the island had their power restored, according to power company LUMA. Crews had restored power to roughly 616,000 customers as of about 9 p.m. Tuesday local time, according to a notice on the company's website.

Ski patrol strike at largest resort in US leads to long lines, closed trails
Nearly 200 ski patrol and safety workers are on strike over demands for higher pay at Park City Mountain Resort, which is owned by Vail Resorts Inc, demanding an entry-level base wage of $23 an hour, up from the current $21, according to an emailed statement from the ski patrol union. Park City remained open on Tuesday, and many of the ski patrol were still working, Vail Resorts said in an emailed statement.
