Taylor Robertson breaks NCAA 3-point record, but Oklahoma falls at Iowa State

Taylor Robertson couldn’t help but think about her dad when her 3-pointer dropped through the bucket — just like Dave Robertson taught his daughter — in the first quarter of Saturday’s game at Iowa State.

The shot made the Oklahoma super senior the all-time 3-point leader in NCAA women’s basketball history, breaking a tie with Ohio State’s Kelsey Mitchell.

“I think that he would be really proud,” Robertson said after the 12th-ranked Sooners fell 86-78 to the No. 15 Cyclones in Ames, Iowa. “I think if he was here, he wouldn’t have said much about it, he probably would have just gave me a big hug, and he would have been sad that we didn’t win because that was his main thing, too. It doesn’t matter what you do individually as long as you win.”

It didn’t take long for Robertson to get the record out of the way, after tying it in Wednesday’s loss at Texas.

Midway through the first quarter, Robertson came off a screen from Liz Scott near the top of the key and drained the first shot she took.

“I’ve had quite a few of those in my career here, so it was only right,” Robertson said.

It was the first of six 3-pointers Robertson hit in the game, helping the Sooners stay in the game until late.

Robertson finished with a season-high 25 points, going 6-for-8 from beyond the arc to finish the game with 503 career 3-pointers.

Reaching the record was freeing for Robertson.

“It was just nice to get the first one and then just play,” she said. “We can just play basketball and not have to worry about, ‘Oh, I have to make one.’ … We can just have the main focus on everybody just winning the game.”

Reaching the record had long been a likelihood for Robertson, who hit 131 as a sophomore in 2019-20.

By the end of last season, Robertson had 446, moving into sixth place.

Though Robertson is in her sixth season, she accomplished the feat in one fewer game than Mitchell, 139-138.

Dave Robertson and his daughter shared a love of basketball from the time she was little.

She started shooting on a small plastic hoop in the family’s living room, moving to an outdoor goal on her sixth birthday.

Dave Robertson died in 2017.

Robertson’s mom, Terri, grandparents, and aunt and uncle were all at Hilton Coliseum for Saturday’s game.

“I really appreciate all of them coming every time because it’s not a close drive for them to make,” Robertson said.
