Ghostbusters: Afterlife did well enough for a sequel, and the cast for that sequel is starting to come together.

As reported by Deadline, the untitled film has added four new names, two from Marvel projects, one known for a Stephen King adaptation, and a Taskmaster alumni.

The publication states that Eternals' Kumail Nanjiani, Agents of SHIELD's Patton Oswalt, Doctor Sleep's Emily Alyn Lind, and comedian James Acaster will be playing currently unknown characters, alongside a returning Paul Rudd, Finn Wolfhard and Carrie Coon.

Following Afterlife, which was set in Oklahoma, the sequel will be moving to New York City and the firehouse from the original film. Jason Reitman won't be directing, but will be part of the writing team with Jason Blumenfeld and new director Gil Kenan, as well as producing.

The sequel is a high priority for Sony after the first one was a commercial hit, with a currently pencilled-in release date of December this year, which seems like a short time to turn a shoot (which began this week) and post-production around, but not impossible, so we'll see.

Although it made money, Afterlife wasn't a massive critical success, with Digital Spy's review stating: "There are times when putting the emotional and narrative weight of the story on the shoulders of kids works; Ghostbusters Afterlife is not one of them. This isn't necessarily the fault of the actors, but rather of a clunky and Easter-egg laden script that only sometimes manages a chuckle, never a guffaw.

"Paul Rudd does his best to lighten the mood, but every gag goes on too long, each one an extended wink at the audience. Fans of the original may be pleased by the wealth of references to the film, but without a heart of its own Ghostbusters: Afterlife sinks under the weight of its predecessor while trying desperately to emulate it."

Will this sequel be able to move past nostalgia and take the series forward and establish an identity of its own?
