A taqueria will open this week in the former Picante spot in Wesley Heights

A new taqueria with soft-serve margaritas, house-made Puffy Chips and at least 14 varieties of tacos is opening Oct. 7 in Charlotte’s Wesley Heights neighborhood, in the former Picante location.

Que Fresa Taqueria + Bar, named after “Mexican slang for a preppy person,” was inspired by owner ‘s Manny Flores’ wife, Paula, who grew up in Mexico in the 1980s. Expect a fun atmosphere at the restaurant, doused in pink and accented with calaveras (the decorative skulls you’d often see connected with the Day of the Dead). There’s also a patio out front, with string lighting for evening dining.

The food: Chips and dips are on the menu here, so they won’t come to the table automatically. Shareables — called “The Queens Favorites” — include house-made Puffy Chips and Morita salsa (made from smoked red-ripened jalapenos), Loaded Taquitos and Bang Bang Camarones (otherwise known as shrimp).

There are bowls, burritos and tortas. But the star of the show — as you’d expect from a taqueria — is the tacos, with a lineup of 14 creative combinations and street tacos that includes birria. Interesting choices include La Toxica, a combo of fried chicken, mango Buffalo sauce, and carrot and celery slaw with a blue cheese crema and mango salsa; and the tofu chile, with an adobo marinade, whole pinto beans, corn and cabbage mix, pickled onion, cotija cheese and crispy tortilla strips.

The drinks: The drink menu shows a classic margarita and a colado mojito, as well as tequila flights and beer. But what stands out is its lineup of craft cocktails, highlighted by the featured favorite, La Fresa Fria (frozen strawberry soft serve, gold tequila, triple sec and a ginger-citrus blend). Soft-serve margaritas are on the way, too.

Daily specials: A sandwich board sits outside already, touting daily deals. Notable discounts include:

• Taco Tuesday combos of two tacos for $7 or three tacos for $9 (your choice of carnitas, pollo asado, chicken tinga or tofu chile); and

• Wing It Thursday, with $1 wings (mango Buffalo, sweet and sour Valentina or lemon pepper) and $2 off local drafts.
