Tamzin Outhwaite has revealed she was "completely shocked" by the TV gender pay gap and has called for it to be closed.

The actress - who will be reprising her role as Melanie Owen in EastEnders at the start of 2018 - expressed her shock at the pay gap between men and women, seemingly hinting at the controversy following the publication of the BBC's inaugural annual report.

Published in July this year, the report found a significant gender pay gap between on and off screen talent.

And, in response to this report or not, Tamzin has said that "it's time to make a change."

"The one thing we need to sort out is the pay gap between men and women, which has frankly completely shocked me," she told Daily Mail.

"I think we all knew about it but it was never out in the open. Now it is and we can see it, it's time to make a change."

During the interview, Tamzin also said she felt encouraged by progression of gender equality in the industry.

"I don't feel as an actress that time is passing me by," she added.

"I've always preferred playing 'real' roles to glamorous parts.

"There are more female directors and writers out there writing great parts for older women now, which is brilliant."

EastEnders airs Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays on BBC One.
