Nominations for the 89th Academy Awards are set to be announced bright and early on Tuesday morning, Jan. 24. We can expect La La Land, Moonlight, and Manchester by the Sea to dominate the field (with some love for Fences, Jackie, Nocturnal Animals, Arrival, and Hidden Figures spread around as well). However, we're still hoping a few out-of-left-field choices defy the odds and sneak into the mix when the Academy's choices are revealed. In anticipation of the official list of 2017’s contenders, here’s a salute to the Oscar long shots we'd love to see snag nominations.
Yesterday, we brought you the exclusive first look at the filmmaker’s Stooges/Iggy Pop documentary, Gimme Danger. Today you can check out the trailer premiere for his critically acclaimed new drama, Paterson (watch above). Paterson stars Adam Driver (Girls, The Force Awakens) as Paterson, a bus driver with poetic aspirations in blue-collar Paterson, New Jersey.
A gentle, attentive look at seven days in the life of an outwardly unremarkable man, Paterson, with Adam Driver, is lovely in its simplicity and big-heartedness.
Adam Driver has casually revealed why Kylo Ren, his tortured soul from ‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens’, turned to the dark side. In the movie, First Order Supreme Leader Snoke has Ren on the cusp of full radicalisation, at which point he turns his homemade lightsaber on *spoiler alert* his own father, Han Solo.
“We’re allowed to talk about lightsabers!” coos Daisy Ridley at the start of the above behind-the-scenes clip. And not only does she and co-star John Boyega talk about the iconic weapons, we get to see how they trained to get their swordplay on in Star Wars: The Force Awakens.
A low-fi sci-fi secret unfolds in Midnight Special when a boy with vexing supernatural powers becomes the target of both government officials and a group of religious zealots. Jaeden Lieberher (Masters of Sex) plays Alton, a child whose mysterious energy makes him suffer in pain, and can cause objects to rain down from sky, as seen in this exclusive scene above. Alton’s father (Michael Shannon) is desperate to help, racing against time to evade foes, including Adam Driver as an NSA agent, to get his son to an undisclosed destination.
It’s almost impossible to avoid anything to do with ‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens’ at the moment, but it’s not all spoilers and complaining.
Samuel L Jackson’s Mace Windu might have been the best thing to come out of the ‘Star Wars’ prequels. So, anything that the legendary actor has to say regarding the franchise is always worth hearing.
You’re never too old to play with action figures, something we’ll believe until we’re kissing our Black Series 6-inch Stormtrooper Luke Skywalker figure goodbye from our death beds. While Ford assessed the various incarnations of Little Han Solo we’ve seen over the years (“Too small,” “Too buff,” “He’s got a strong nose, I admire that”), Boyega (Finn) showed us how to make him properly run, and Ridley (Rey) used hers to deliver her favorite line from the movie (“I’m no one”).
‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens’ is in cinemas now across the world and we predict that a million voices across the galaxy will cry out with joy when the final credits roll. JJ Abrams has delivered a slam-dunk of a movie that fans are going to love.
Joseph Gordon-Levitt came dressed as Yoda. Sofia Vergara wore Princess Leia’s signature hair buns. Other actors like Rainn Wilson (who also came in costume) and Eric Stonestreet tweeted out their approval.
We’re only a week away from its release, yet very, very few people have actually seen Star Wars: The Force Awakens. Director J.J. Abrams has at least let his cast see it, though. “Number one, best,” Harrison Ford said when asked where it ranks among all the Star Wars movies (watch above), an answer we’d advise you take with a huge grain of salt given the actor who plays Han Solo’s typically cagey interview style.
As if a new poster wasn’t enough of a Sunday treat, the fine folks at Lucasfilm and Disney have dropped a few more teaser-filled morsels for detail-hungry Star Wars fans to nibble on ahead of Monday night’s big new trailer premiere. In three short clips from the upcoming trailer that were posted to Twitter, we get a look at our three main new heroes: Finn (John Boyega), Poe Dameron (Oscar Isaac) and Rey (Daisy Ridley). Oh, and BB-8 gets a taste of the spotlight, too. The Resistance gathers tomorrow.
