Is The Naked Chicken Chalupa Actually Healthier For You Than A Regular One? We Asked A Health Expert

Update, May 25, 2021: If you haven't heard the news quite yet, I'm here to tell you that as of last week, Taco Bell's infamous Naked Chicken Chalupa is officially available (again) nationwide. For those of you who don't know, the item first appeared on TB menus in 2017, but it became a distant memory soon after. Now that it's back though, albeit for just a limited time, you may be wondering what all the hype is about the crispy and crunchy meal. And I bet you're wondering: Is it actually better for you than the regular one?

Luckily, nutritionist and certified personal trainer Kevin Dwayne was able to give Delish a little insight on whether or not you should be #TeamNCC or #TeamOGC the next time you pull up at Taco Bell: “Taco Bell’s Naked Chicken Chalupa adds more flavor, but [also adds] more calories when compared to the Regular Chicken Chalupa," he said.

Noting that the fan-favorite menu item adds "200 more calories with the flavor," Dwayne suggests that the original Chicken Chalupa be the option those who are bit more health-conscious go with. His tip for those who are regularly eating on the go (see: ME!)? Choose wisely, of course! "Remember to choose food items that have fresh ingredients, [that are] low in calories and fat, and ones that give you a good source of protein. And, don’t forget your water!”

So, there you have it folks. If you were on the fence about whether you should go with the NCC or the OG Chicken Chalupa, this hopefully makes your decision easier. Whatever it is that you choose, though, happy eating!

Original post, May 18, 2021: Taco Bell may have broken our hearts when they removed the longstanding Mexican Pizza (and shredded chicken!) from its menu in 2020, but they are truly on the path to redemption. From bringing back both the Beefy Potato Burrito and the Quesalupa—albeit for a limited-time only—to opening up fancy new locations, the popular late-night eatery is making amends for their actions. And, to keep working their way back into your heart, they've announced the return of the successful Naked Chicken Chalupa. Yep, you read that right. The N.C.C. is back!

Available nationwide beginning on Thursday, May 20, the Naked Chicken Chalupa will find a spot on Taco Bell's menu for the first time since 2017. Made with all-white-meat chicken marinated in bold Mexican spices, this particular Chalupa is rolled in a crunchy coating and finished off with an a unbeatable crisp. To make it be its absolute best for your tastebuds, the N.C.C. is then topped with lettuce, cheddar cheese, diced tomatoes, and avocado ranch sauce. How divine!

Naked Chicken Chalupa fans—or those who are ready to give it a try for the first time—can get one a la carte for $3.49 or can enjoy it as part of the $5.99 Crispy Chalupa Box that also includes a Beef Burrito, Crunchy Taco, and medium fountain drink. If you happen to be a Taco Bell Rewards member though, you can stop by your local Taco Bell on May 19 to chomp on it early. No matter which date you go, however, just know that the Naked Chicken Chalupa is a limited-time only offer so stock up while you can!
