Synovus Financial Corp. (NYSE:SNV) drops to US$5.5b and insiders who purchased earlier this year lose another US$46k

The recent price decline of 4.3% in Synovus Financial Corp.'s (NYSE:SNV) stock may have disappointed insiders who bought US$277k worth of shares at an average price of US$45.44 in the past 12 months. Insiders buy with the expectation to see their investments rise in value over a period of time. However, recent losses have rendered their above investment worth US$231k which is not ideal.

While we would never suggest that investors should base their decisions solely on what the directors of a company have been doing, we do think it is perfectly logical to keep tabs on what insiders are doing.

The Last 12 Months Of Insider Transactions At Synovus Financial

Over the last year, we can see that the biggest insider purchase was by CEO, President & Executive Director Kevin Blair for US$150k worth of shares, at about US$48.49 per share. That means that even when the share price was higher than US$37.93 (the recent price), an insider wanted to purchase shares. It's very possible they regret the purchase, but it's more likely they are bullish about the company. We always take careful note of the price insiders pay when purchasing shares. It is generally more encouraging if they paid above the current price, as it suggests they saw value, even at higher levels.

Looking at the total insider shareholdings in a company can help to inform your view of whether they are well aligned with common shareholders. We've certainly seen higher levels of insider ownership elsewhere, but these holdings are enough to suggest alignment between insiders and the other shareholders.
