A symphony and a candlelight vigil held for Surfside victims Sunday

Approximately 150 South Florida residents gathered Sunday evening at the beach at 87th Street for a sound bath and silent candlelight vigil in honor of victims of the Surfside disaster.

Organizer Jen Rose said the sound bath was designed to use music to process grief and emotions still being felt by the community in the wake of the tragedy that left 98 dead.

“As we know, grief can be kind of hard to express with words, so we music to express ourselves, to express our sadness our grief, our hope, everything that we can’t put into words...Everyone that’s playing has one intention, and that is to heal.”

Many of those gathered were clad in white in honor of the victims. About a half dozen gongs sounded for the better part of an hour while incense burned and candles flickered as the sun set. The mourners encircled a bed of white roses that were eventually cast into the sea in tribute to those affected.

Earlier, a classical music performance and a separate candlelight vigil are planned for Sunday evening to honor victims of the Surfside disaster.

The Wilton Manors-based South Florida Symphony Orchestra was slated to perform at 6 p.m. at the beach at 96th Street to honor those affected by the Champlain Tower South tragedy. The concert was produced by the Town of Surfside and the Village of Bal Habour. According to a Facebook post, a brass quintet, a string quartet and two vocalists performed.
