An investigation is underway after suspected gunshots were fired at police in Streatham Common from a car that is believed to be stolen.

Officers were in pursuit of a suspected stolen vehicle when two suspected gunshots were fired in the early hours of Tuesday.

Then the police car stopped on Copley Park, near Streatham Common South, where the suspects “made off”, the Met said.

No one was injured and the police car was not damaged.

An investigation is underway and the area is cordoned off. CCTV and forensic examinations are underway, the Met said.

Police are working to trace a Grey Kia Niro Estate with the numberplate VRM EK19PPX.

Anyone who has seen it asked to call 101, referencing CAD 861/5 July, or to contact Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.

The Met also want to hear from anyone who lives or may have been driving in the area, and may have captured doorbell or dash cam footage of the stolen car.

Chief Superintendent Colin Wingrove, head of policing for Southwark and Lambeth, said: “We are incredibly relieved that they did not suffer any injuries and are now looking to ensure they receive appropriate welfare and support following this incident.

“I know the public will be shocked to hear of this incident. Our specialist detectives are following a number of leads; if you have information that can support them, I ask you to contact us immediately.”

Superintendent Dav Ivey said on Twitter: “I know one of the officers well - a brilliantly professional response team cop, a real thief taker - am so proud of him & his operator.”
