Suspected burglar fatally shoots man with stolen gun in North Highlands, authorities say

A man died after confronting a burglar who shot him with a stolen gun outside a North Highlands home early Monday morning, authorities said.

At around 5:30 a.m., someone called 911 to report that a family member had been shot on Greenlawn Way in North Highland, the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office said in a news release.

When deputies arrived, they found an man with multiple gunshot wounds to his upper body. He died a few hours later at an area hospital. Authorities didn’t release his name.



The sheriff’s office said the shooter, who was believed to have been breaking into cars in the area, likely stole the gun used in the shooting from a safe that was kept “in a detached structure.” The victim confronted the suspect in that building and was shot, authorities said.

It’s not clear from the news release if the safe was locked..

After the shooting, the suspect ran off. He hasn’t been located, the sheriff’s office said.

Detectives provided no further suspect details.
