The fallout from Canadian wildfires burning in Quebec began to hit the northeastern United States on Tuesday, filling the skies of cities like New York and Washington D.C. with smoke and all the colors of the apocalypse. Meteorologists say the smoky skies should dissipate by the end of the week, but in the meantime, according to The New York Times health alerts were issued from New York to the Carolinas, and as far west as Minnesota.

According to the Times more than 400 wildfires were once burning, with a majority of effects being seen in Quebec and Ontario. At a press conference, Bill Blair, Canada's minister of public safety said “The images that we have seen so far this season are some of the most severe ever witnessed in Canada."

In Canada, more than 26,000 people have now been evacuated, with Prime Minister Justin Trudeau calling it "a scary time for a lot of people." One researcher called this an "exceptional situation," stating the ground covered by these recent fires was equal to about the amount of the past decade combined.

Here in the States, the environmental disaster is making for skies that mirror those of end-of-days movies. Images show the White House, the New York City Skyline, and Toronto's CN Tower surrounded by hues of grey and orange. Fiery orange sunrises became the backdrop for outgoing flights and high-rise buildings. Here's what the northeast looked like well into Wednesday.

Many ranchers stayed behind to care for livestock as neighbours fled wildfires that ravaged Canada's Alberta province this week, others tearfully telling AFP all they could do was open corral gates and hope their abandoned cows found their own way to safety.
