Weddings, anniversaries, birthdays—all joyous celebrations, but we'd like to think there's one thing even more special: adopting a new puppy! Introducing a new paw-tner to the family is exciting for everyone involved, but it's important not to forget to be super prepared. That's why we've teamed up with Eric Wiese, animal behavior specialist and host of the CBS series Lucky Dog, to help you have the best time with your new furry friend.

Although, these valuable tips are a great place to start when adopting a new pet, we always recommend reaching out to your vet or other professionals for more in-depth advice tailored to your needs.

But, if you ever need pet training inspo or just want to watch im-paw-sibly cute pups from the comfort of your couch, be sure to tune into Lucky Dog Saturday mornings on CBS (check your local listings) or stream episodes on Pluto TV.

Make your pet feel at home

Have the proper environmental setup for your pet. For example, a crate should be your puppy's "safe space." The area where you keep the crate should be an extension of the safe space. Think of it as your pup's "den." Most importantly, make sure the crate or designated area is big enough for your pet to stand up, turn around, stretch, and lie down comfortably in, but not so big that they can go potty in one corner and sleep in another.

Get them to the vet

As soon as you can, get your pet to the veterinarian. You want to keep them up to date on all of their vaccines and establish a paw-sitive relationship between your furry friend and their doctor.

(Re)Schedule your life accordingly

New pups can be a handful and sometimes unpredictable. Welcoming a new pet into the household can be their most impressionable time and some may display behaviors that require more attention. The more you can be there for them, the stronger your bond will be.

Be prepared for teething

When it comes to puppies, teething should be expected. Make sure you have the appropriate toys for them—ones they can chew on when they're teething so they don't chew on everything else...especially your favorite tennis shoes.

Have the proper traveling method

When you're picking up your new pet, make sure to have the proper travel case for them. Depending on their size, you'll want a travel case that has been designed to integrate with your car's seat belt system, or a crate that can anchor to the latches or luggage anchors in the trunk of a hatchback/SUV.
