Superman & Lois star Elizabeth Tulloch has opened up about season three's tragic twist.
After choosing to work on their marriage, the new season sees Clark (Tyler Hoechlin) and Lois (Tulloch) try to come to terms with the possibility of having a new baby around after they suspect that Lois might be pregnant.
It's later revealed that Lois is, in fact, pregnant – but she's also been diagnosed with stage three inflammatory breast cancer.

Discussing the tragic storyline with Entertainment Weekly, Tulloch explained that Lois' cancer is "very, very aggressive" and "deadly".
"I just knew nothing like that had been done before, to my knowledge anyway, either on screen or in the comics or anything," she continued.
"I felt like it was overall going to be really grounding and an interesting villain to have, because this isn't someone that Clark can just go kick its butt. He's powerless against this, and so is she. I thought it was pretty fascinating to explore."
The actress went on to say that she spent lots of time researching the disease, as well talking with numerous women who have been diagnosed with it.

Tulloch said that when she asked the women what they wanted her to convey to viewers who would watch the show, the most common response was to encourage women to get mammograms and ultrasounds.
As for how Lois' diagnosis will affect the Kent family moving forward, Tulloch added: "Lois approaches it the way you might anticipate she would, which is 'I'm not going to let this affect me. I have work to do, I have stuff to do, we have an investigation to do, I have to go after these villains'.
"And at a certain point she has to face the reality, which is that she's too sick to do everything she wants to be able to do. It's very scary for Clark, who's not used to being afraid of anything, having to deal with this. I would say this brings them a lot closer."
