Super Mario Bros movie's first reactions have landed

The Super Mario Bros Movie warps into cinemas this week, and we finally have the first reactions to the new animated movie.

Based on the hugely popular Nintendo series, the new movie sees Brooklyn plumbers Mario and Luigi transported down a mysterious pipe into the magical new world of the Mushroom Kingdom.

When the brothers are separated, Mario must embark on an epic quest to reunite with Luigi with the assistance of Toad and the strong-willed ruler of the Mushroom Kingdom, Princess Peach.

The movie is released this Wednesday (April 5), only in cinemas, and those lucky few to have already seen it have shared their reactions to The Super Mario Bros Movie.

"Super Mario Bros Movie is a love letter to the game and lore of everyone's favorite plumber brothers! Easter Eggs galore! Utilizes sound and score perfectly! Peach is badass! The voice is addressed. Jack Black sings! Fans will flip!" film critic Tessa Smith shared.

Meanwhile, critic Erik Davis said of the film: "Wahoo! The Super Mario Bros Movie is the ultimate love letter to every era of Mario. Loved the humor and especially Jack Black's Bowser. I felt the same way watching the movie as I do playing the games. It's just joyful. Also, stay for the credits!"

However, despite an overwhelming positive response, not everyone was totally on board with the adaptation, with Germain Lussier stating: "I really wanted to like it but I did not. A few solid scenes capture the spirit of the game but mostly it's an overly goofy, bare-bones plot, filled with bad jokes and worse song choices. It looks great but I was more bored and annoyed than entertained."

Marvel's Chris Pratt and It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia star Charlie Day take on the iconic roles of Mario and Luigi, respectively, in the new movie which also stars Anya Taylor-Joy as Princess Peach, Keegan Michael-Key as Toad and Jack Black as Bowser.

Pratt's casting did lead to a backlash from Mario fans, as well as John Leguizamo who appeared in the 1993 movie as Luigi. However, the casting has been defended by co-director Aaron Horvath.

"For us, it made total sense," Horvath explained. "He's really good at playing a blue-collar hero with a ton of heart. For the way that Mario is characterised in our film, he's perfect for it."

The movie also changes things up for Princess Peach as she's no longer the 'damsel-in-distress' to be rescued, with that switching to Luigi instead.

"It's Mario's goal to save his brother from Bowser's clutches," Horvath added.

The Super Mario Bros Movie is released in cinemas on April 5.
