Summer kickoff: Oceans of Fun, KC spray parks and area pools open for Memorial Day weekend

Memorial Day weekend is fast approaching and that can mean only one thing: The swimming pools are open.

The weather’s expected to be at optimal swimming temperatures in Kansas City this weekend. Take a look at what’s going to be open for the summer.

OCEANS OF FUN

Worlds of Fun is already open for the season, and on Saturday the water park will be open for business. They’ll kick off the season with a 40th Anniversary Beach Bash, featuring a live DJ, a live chalk muralist and more. The first 700 guests into the park will receive a special giveaway on Oceans of Fun’s opening day.

The park is open from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. this weekend and on Memorial Day on Monday. It will be closed for the weekdays following, but will open back up on June 4 for the same hours and stay that way until Aug. 8.

After the week of Aug. 8, the park goes back to weekend hours. It will be open from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. every Friday, Saturday and Sunday after until Labor Day, which is the final day of the season.

WHAT ELSE IS OPEN?

We published this list of pools opening in Kansas City during the summer, but here’s a reminder:

KANSAS CITY SPRAY PARKS

These are free and will be open daily starting Memorial Day weekend until Labor Day weekend. The parks in the city will be open from 11 a.m. until 7 p.m.

There are also three spray parks in Wyandotte County. All the spray parks are free and these open on May 28.

KANSAS CITY POOLS

KC Parks pools will be open this summer from June 11 until July 31. The city’s two water parks will be open from June 11 until Aug. 21. Many of the pools require a small admission fee, and a number of the pools only take cash. Regular one-time admission for most pools will run you about $4. Pools that will be in operation this season include:

OTHER POOLS AROUND KANSAS CITY

These pools open throughout Memorial Day weekend.

  • Summit Waves, 120 SW Blue Parkway, Lee’s Summit. Admission is $9 for Lee’s Summit residents and $12 for everyone else. It opens May 28.

  • Splash Cove, 5800 King Ave., Shawnee. Shawnee residents pay $6 and everyone else pays $10. It opens May 28.

  • Black Bob Bay, 14570 W 151st St., Olathe. Cost of admission ranges from $7-12 for all Olathe pools. It opens on May 28.

  • Frontier Pool, 15909 W. 127th St., Olathe. The pool opens on May 30.

  • Mill Creek Pool, 320 E. Poplar St., Olathe. It opens for the season on May 30.

  • Oregon Trail Pool, 1750 W. Dennis Ave., Olathe. This pool also opens May 30.

  • Stonegate Pool, 9701 Antioch Road, Overland Park. All Overland Park pools cost $6 for residents, $7 for non-residents and it opens May 29.

  • Tomahawk Ridge Aquatic Center, 11950 Lowell Avenue, Overland Park. It opens May 29.

  • Young’s Pool, 8421 W. 77th St., Overland Park with a May 29 opening.

  • Ad Astra Pool, 8265 Maurer Rd., Lenexa. Pools in Lenexa will cost between $5-8 per person. It opens on May 28.

  • Flat Rock Creek Pool, 13120 W. 103rd St., Lenexa. Open for business on May 28.

  • Indian Trails Aquatic Center, 8801 Greenway Lane, Lenexa. The pool’s open for visitors on May 28.

  • Parkwood Pool, 950 Quindaro Blvd., Kansas City, Kansas. Admission to this pool costs $2 and it opens on May 28.
