Strictly Come Dancing star Max George has shared that taking part in this year's Strictly live tour has had a major positive effect on his mental health.

The singer and actor, who rose to fame as a member of boyband The Wanted, told The Sun that he is "feeling so much better" after getting back into dance training for the tour.

"I've been in a lull in lockdown," he said. "The last two years have been quite difficult mentally for me. My fitness waned a lot but I'm getting fitter and fitter now. And I can feel that in my head. I'm feeling so much better now."

The singer, who has also starred in Glee, added that he has "got a lot of ups rather than downs at the moment" and that he is "feeling good" after previously being diagnosed with depression and anxiety several years ago.

Max took part in the 2020 series of Strictly with professional partner Dianne Buswell, with the pair becoming the third couple to be eliminated from the show. He is now taking part in the live Strictly tour, which began earlier this week in Birmingham, alongside dancer Katya Jones.

Also taking part in this year's tour are 2021 winner Rose Ayling-Ellis, runner-up John Whaite and fellow 2021 stars Rhys Stephenson, Tilly Ramsay and Sara Davies, while 2020 finalist Maisie Smith has replaced an injured AJ Odudu.

Max also has another set of live shows to prepare for as he will be heading out on a UK tour with The Wanted in March, eight years after the group went on an indefinite hiatus.

The band reunited last year for a charity concert following the news that member Tom Parker has been diagnosed with an inoperable brain tumour.

He later took part in Channel 4 documentary Inside My Head, which followed his journey after he received the cancer diagnosis and was praised by viewers.

Strictly Come Dancing airs on BBC One.
