Lionsgate has acquired the English-language adaptation rights to the Danish action-comedy Riders of Justice, which stars Doctor Strange's Mads Mikkelsen.

Stranger Things producers Shawn Levy and Dan Cohen have teamed up with Dan Levine to produce the new adaptation under the umbrella of production company 21 Laps, after the success of the Ryan Reynolds-led Free Guy.

The new version will be written by Anders Thomas Jensen and Nikolaj Arcel, who both wrote the 2020 movie. Jensen, a three-time Oscar nominee, also directed the original.

The film follows a soldier named Markus (Mikkelsen) who returns home to care for his teenage daughter after his wife is killed. However, when there is suggestion of foul play, he seeks revenge alongside an eclectic group to find whoever is responsible for his wife's death.

Lionsgate's President of Production said: "There are few films that balance the action, emotion and dark humour that Anders did so successfully in Riders of Justice. We're confident that the movie will translate perfectly to English-language audiences as well."

Jensen and Arcel are currently writing the limited series The Monster of Florence with Antonio Banderas.

Free Guy grossed over $330 million worldwide, and Levy is set to team up with Reynolds again for Netflix's The Adams Project. 21 Laps is also producing Crater, a coming-of-age thriller for Disney+, and Rosaline, a 20th Century Studios teen comedy, and is working on season four of Stranger Things, as well as season two of Shadow & Bone.

There is no word yet as to whether Mikkelsen will be reprising his role as Markus in the English-language adaptation, but it could be a good move to have him in the remake, capitalising on fans of the original film.

Mikkelsen has a long list of acting credits, first rising to fame in his native Denmark, before appearing in James Bond film Casino Royale, Clash of the Titans, Doctor Strange and Rogue One: A Star War Story.

He will be appearing in the new Harry Potter franchise film Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore in 2022 and in an as-yet-untitled Indiana Jones film in 2023.

No release date for Riders of Justice has been confirmed yet.
