Star Wars: The Force Awakens Beats Harry Potter At Global Box Office

With J.J. Abrams’ ‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens’ smashing records left, right and centre, it’s now surpassed the global success of the final ‘Harry Potter’ film.

The latest ‘Star Wars’ movie is now sitting in seventh position in the biggest-grossing movies of all time list, having taken (as of Friday, 1 January) an incredible $1.39 billion in just 16 days. Currently (as of Sunday, 3 January) the box office figure now stands at just over $1.5 billion.

‘Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows - Part 2′ grossed $1.34 billion back in 2011, but it seems ‘The Force Awakens’ is determined to continue to make its way up the list and eventually challenge James Cameron’s ‘Avatar’ for the biggest grosser of all time.

However, there’s still some way to go if Abrams and co intend to dethrone Cameron’s CGI sci-fi spectacle, which made a whopping $2.8 billion over the course of its IMAX, 3D and re-release.

‘The Force Awakens’ is well on its way to surpassing its other Disney achievement, ‘Avengers: Age of Ultron’, which took an impressive $1.4 billion.

It’ll be some weeks until we can get a firmer idea over what the latest ‘Star Wars’ will end up making, profit-wise, but with the potential for a re-release later this year - possibly a Director’s Cut with the 20 or so minutes that were cut out of the theatrical version - there’s every chance ‘The Force Awakens’ could become the biggest movie ever.
