Star Wars: The Force Awakens: Andy Serkis Reveals More About His Role

With ‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens’ a month away, Andy Serkis has revealed more about his mysterious character, Supreme Leader Snoke, in the upcoming issue of Empire.

Speaking about his early time on set, Serkis reveals he was none the wiser over who his character actually was, even after having portrayed him.

“I worked specifically with Domhnall Gleeson and with Adam Driver. My first day was basically standing on a 25-foot podium doing Lord Snoke without the faintest idea what he looked like… or in fact who he was! I was very high up, totally on my own, away from everybody else, but acting with them,” he shared.

In contrasting fashion to his prior roles as ‘Lord of the Rings’’ Gollum or ‘Rise of the Planet of the Apes’’ Caesar, nobody has any info on this evil leader or knows what he actually looks like, until now.

“He is severely damaged. Although he’s a powerful leader, he comes across as vulnerable. Very scarred and disfigured.”

What Serkis did say was that, aside from his character being a force to be reckoned with, he may be old and battered, but is a scarily powerful, domineering presence.

“We used sort of a ‘Kongolizer’ method of having sound come out of speakers to give a sense of scale and distance for the character. So it was very challenging and scary, in fact probably one of my most scary film experiences I’ve ever had.”

Fortunately, there’s not long to go now, with fans counting down the days until release, when we’ll (hopefully) discover what Snoke is all about and learn about the fate other significant persons - such as one Luke Skywalker.

‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens’ is in UK cinemas from 17 December.
