Rian Johnson Begins Editing Star Wars: Episode VIII

Everyone and their dog seems to be excited about Rian Johnson’s ‘Star Wars: Episode VIII’, especially when filming began earlier this year, and now fans are getting just as giddy after the director revealed editing had begun.

To anyone not up on their film making processes, the edit is the final stage when making a movie, with any reshoots and additional material available to be cut into the final film here.

‘Looper’ helmer Johnson takes on the mighty challenge of directing a ‘Star Wars’ film, following in the footsteps of J.J. Abrams who successfully saw last year’s ‘The Force Awakens’ make over $2 billion at the worldwide box office.

With filming having finished earlier this summer, Johnson stepped away from the project briefly before posting a photo of him sitting in an editing suite over on his Instagram account.

With it, he simply wrote the caption, ‘Day one!’ which means we’re edging closer to having the first cut of ‘Star Wars: Episode VIII’ completed.

The eight movie in the sci-fi franchise isn’t actually out until December, 2017 but if anyone thinks Johnson’s ahead of schedule, then think again. Editing is a painstaking;y slow process, especially if things aren’t shaping up as he wants - but let’s hope those reshoots and the copious amount of footage he’s amassed during the actual shoot will be enough for him and his team to make a film worthy to stand proudly next to the likes of ‘A New Hope’, ‘The Empire Strikes Back’, ‘Return of the Jedi’,and ‘The Force Awakens’.

What the beginning of the edit does mean is that we could be set for a teaser trailer before the year’s out - possibly included with this December’s release of ‘Rogue One: A Star Wars Story’.

The following 14 months will see the buzz around the film grow and grow, with expectation high and the pressure on, the jury’s out whether it’ll make as much money than ‘The Force Awakens’ and be as warmly received.
