Star Trek: Strange New Worlds and Lower Decks have futures confirmed

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds and Star Trek: Lower Decks have both had their futures confirmed – and both will be renewed.

Strange New Worlds has been renewed for a 10-episode third season, while Lower Decks has been handed a 10-episode fifth season, Paramount+ has confirmed.

Strange New Worlds follows characters including Captain Christopher Pike (Anson Mount), science officer Spock (Ethan Peck), communications expert Uhura (Celia Rose Gooding) and Pike's deputy Una Chin-Riley/'Number One' (Rebecca Romijn), as they set out to explore the universe and discover new life forms on the USS Enterprise.

Set before James T Kirk's captaincy of the Enterprise, Strange New Worlds is set to return for its second season on Thursday, June 15, with new episodes premiering weekly.

It will also cross over with Lower Decks during season two in an episode that will feature both live-action and animated scenes, directed by Star Trek: The Next Generation and Picard's Jonathan Frakes.

Meanwhile, season 4 of Lower Decks is expected to hit the streamer at some point in "late summer" in the US, according to an announcement on startrek.com.

The animated series has become a cult hit with fans of the franchise, and the upcoming season is set to show an unknown force threatening the galaxy.

News of both shows' renewal follows confirmation that Star Trek: Discovery will end with its fifth season, which is currently set to air early in 2024.

Paramount Streaming's chief programming officer Tanya Giles has promised that the fifth and final season of Discovery "will see our beloved crew take on a new adventure and we can't wait to celebrate the series' impact on the franchise leading up to its final season early next year".

Another Star Trek TV series which is due to end soon is Star Trek: Picard, starring Patrick Stewart as he reprises the role of his fan-favourite character Jean-Luc Picard.

However, Stewart hinted that the door has been left open for more adventures for his Starfleet admiral after season three comes to an end in April.

"There is still enormous potential for matters in what we can do and there are doors left open and we didn't close all of them," he said earlier this year.

Meanwhile, it was revealed earlier this year that a planned Discovery spin-off show in which Oscar winner Michelle Yeoh will return as Philippa Georgiou is still in development.

The series is expected to focus on Starfleet's Section 31 and star Yeoh as the Mirror Universe version of her character, who was recruited into the covert intelligence agency.
