‘Stale’ West Ham need more signings after Manchester City defeat, admits David Moyes

David Moyes outlined his intention to “freshen up” his “stale” West Ham squad after an opening weekend defeat to Manchester City.

New signing Maxwel Cornet was introduced to the London Stadium fans at half-time of the 2-0 defeat before Gianluca Scamacca came off the bench to make his debut, but Moyes is keen for more new faces.

“We need to freshen up a little bit, we’re a bit stale at the moment,” Moyes told Sky Sports.

“But look our centre-back [£28million signing Nayef Aguerd] gets injured in a pre-season friendly and we can’t do anything about that. So we have attempted to do it.

“Our centre-forward is getting himself fit. The goalkeeper we signed [Alphonse Areola] plays today after Lukasz [Fabianski] gets injured.

“You can see we’ve still got a bit of work to do.”

An Erling Haaland double earned City the win in east London and West Ham boss Moyes admitted to being tactically outdone by Pep Guardiola.

“They were so good, I felt that tactically they completely outdone us today,” he added.

“They played differently, both full-backs played in the middle of the pitch, made it harder for us to deal with it and they got wide easier. We had worked hard trying to replicate what we did last season to give us a chance but they were so good today.”
