"One must only buy what one likes, and it will find its place." Antiques dealer John Rosselli's words are an anthem for collectors young and old, not to mention designers who champion a truly personal aesthetic. His antiques shop, John Rosselli Antiques, in Manhattan's Upper East Side has been beloved by generations of designers and collectors for 65 years, not only as a true shopping destination but also a place to cultivate taste and train one's eye.

For all those in the collecting and design communities who mourned the shuttering of the shop last fall (and its subsequent transition to an online platform geared towards the design trade), we're ecstatic to share with you some happy news: a selection of Rosselli's collection is coming to market via a Stair Galleries online auction January 27. (A gallery preview will be held January 18-26.)

The sale will feature some of Rosselli's favorite antique furniture pieces and accessories, offering shoppers a unique opportunity to purchase a piece reflective of the antiques dealer's own taste. During the over six decades Rosselli sold antiques, he became known for masterfully mixing English, European, and American antiques with his affinity for blue and white porcelain and more playful pieces.

Rosselli's "trademark has always been a deft blend of fanciful scale and serious furnishings, a patchwork panache that is original and amusing," Stair Galleries noted in its announcement of the sale. His collection also reflects his lifelong "appreciation for craftsmanship and an eagle eye for original decoration."

That appreciation for craftsmanship, perhaps honed during his training as a decorative painter who learned the arts of gesso gilding, marbleizing and faux finishes like malachite, lapis and porphyry, is reflected in Rosselli's own reproductions line, some of which will be included in the Stair Galleries sale.

A broader range of his reproductions line, including his latest collection for Furlow's Folly, Rosselli's collaboration with Furlow Gatewood, is available through John Rosselli & Associates showrooms in New York, Chicago, Washington, DC, and Dania Beach, Florida.
