‘Squid Game’ sparked Halloween costume controversy. What other Netflix shows can inspire?
Several Netflix original shows have left an impression this year, including Netflix’s hugely popular series “Squid Game,” which more than 130 million people have viewed and in return, could generate about $900 million, according to Bloomberg.
The South Korean series recently became controversial as three New York schools banned “Squid Game”-inspired costumes, while others around the world have raised concerns about their children mimicking the show at recess.
But it’s popular, and it’ll probably be a popular costume this Halloween as supply chains race to recreate the inspired outfits in time for Sunday.
Here are some tips from The Bee’s utility team on what you need to create a “Squid-Game” costume without breaking the bank, as well as other characters from popular Netflix shows: “You,” “Bridgerton,’’ “Emily in Paris” and “Cobra Kai.”
‘Squid Game’
“Squid Game,” which began streaming on Netflix on Sept. 17, focuses on a group of desperate, indebted people in South Korea who’ve been tricked into a deadly tournament of children’s games. But soon they volunteer to come back and play to the death to win money they need to survive.
The series was created and directed by Hwang Dong-hyuk, a South Korean film director, who originally come up with the idea for “Squid Game” around 2008. After about a decade, Netflix finally picked it up.
Here’s what you may need to create popular looks:
‘Squid Game’ contestant costume
The most important part of the costume is the numbers as each represents a different character in the show. Here’s what you’ll need:
Green tracksuit or try Amazon if you have time
White fabric for the number patch
Fake blood (to show you didn’t make it out unscathed)
‘Squid Game’ guard costume
The red-clan guards oversee the contestants. This costume may be a little tricky to create, especially because of the white and black masks they wear, but it’s doable.
Red jumpsuit with a hood (a tracksuit would also work)
Ghoul’s mask and apply your own shapes with white tape
‘Squid Game’ Front Man costume
The Front Man is the boss of the guards. He wears an unusual black mask with sharp angles that may be a little hard to recreate.
Long black coat (with a hood)
Gloves
Red light, green light ‘Squid Game’ costume
Recreate the giant robotic school girl who oversees the red light, green light game.
Short-sleeve yellow collared shirt
Knee-length orange dress
‘You’
“You,” created by American writers Greg Berlanti and Sera Gamble centers the inner thoughts and turmoil of Penn Badgley’s character Joe Goldberg, a former bookstore manager in New York who becomes murderously obsessed with one woman after the next.
With the psychological thriller’s Oct. 15 reintroduction to Netflix in its third season, the show follows Goldberg and his love interest Love Quinn, played by actress Victoria Pedretti, as they take on a new town.
This is the perfect opportunity for a couple’s costume because of the popularity of the show, the equal fascination of both characters and their simple looks.
One person can take Joe Goldberg, a charismatic murderer and the other can take Love Quinn, an equally murderous hot-tempered control freak. Together you both can be the best and worst thing for each other, just like the characters on screen. Here’s what you need to create the two main characters’ looks:
Joe Goldberg’s signature look
White t-shirt (tucked into the pants)
Navy or dark brown Khakis
Brown belt
Unbranded dark-colored baseball hat
Chestnut-colored laced boots
Black book bag (optional)
Love Quinn’s outfit from season three, episode 10
Brown cropped v-neck cardigan (buttoned)
Dark washed high-waist skinny jeans
Chesnut-colored ankle boots
Butcher’s knife
‘Bridgerton’
Emmy-nominated drama “Bridgerton,” which was created by American screenwriter Chris Van Dusen and produced by American television producer Shonda Rhimes, is based on Julia Quinn’s best-selling romance series.
“Bridgerton” follows eldest daughter Daphne Bridgerton, played by actress Phoebe Dynevor, as she makes her debut in Regency London’s competitive marriage market. Soon, she and Simon Basset, played by actor Regé-Jean Page, make an unorthodox deal that ends in a knot.
This is an easy and fun costume to recreate, and with a trip to a nearby thrift store, you should be able to mimic the look of Mayfair, London, in 1813 fairly easy.
Here’s what you’ll need to nail the signature look of Daphne Bridgerton or Simon Basset:
Daphne:
Short sheer gloves
Pastel baby-doll cut, floor-length gown
Hair pulled into a bun or up-do
Tiny crown
Simon:
Black riding boots
A flowy white top
A long, dark-colored jacket of your choice
‘Emily in Paris’
Created by American writer Darren Star, “Emily in Paris” follows Lily Collins’ character Emily Cooper, a determined 20-something-year-old from Chicago who moves to Paris for a job opportunity.
Here’s how to channel your inner Emily:
Red beret
Black-and-white checkered jacket or shirt
Heels
Lipstick
Chocolate croissant
‘Cobra Kai’
“Cobra Kai” is an American martial arts series and a sequel to the original “The Karate Kid” films by American screenwriter Robert Mark Kamen. “Cobra Kai,” takes place more than 30 years after the events of the 1984 All Valley Karate Tournament with the continued conflict between actor Ralph Macchio’s character Daniel LaRusso and actor William Zabka’s character Johnny Lawrence.
Here’s what to wear to channel Daniel LaRusso:
White robe (or long-sleeved shirt)
Large headband for your forehead (draw a similar design shown in the series)
