Between TikTok, Instagram, and the most recent Fashion Week season, you may be feeling inspired to update your closet with new textiles and silhouettes (of course, thanks to the rising de-influencing trend, you may also feel encouraged to get rid of certain clothing, shoes, and accessories.). Although fall styles may be top of mind, considering Fashion Week forecasts six months ahead, you may need a refresher on the trendiest styles for spring 2023.

So, what are we wearing? Subscribe to Reviewed’s weekly Style Check newsletter to get the answers from stylish people.

To save you from getting lost down a social media rabbit hole in search of your perfect warm-weather transitional wardrobe, we chatted with two stylists to lend a hand. Ahead, discover the top five trends they suspect will be bigger than ever in the months to come.

Modern Utility

Combining fashion and function, cargo pants are back and better than ever.

It’s no secret that ‘90s and early ‘00s fashion is back in a big way, so it was only a matter of time before cargo pants re-entered the chat. But don’t be mistaken: These aren’t the basic baggy pocketed pants of yesteryear. As seen in LaQuan Smith’s Spring 2023 Ready-to-Wear Collection, the cargo pants trend has been reimagined in every shade of the rainbow, not to mention varying silhouettes, some of which aren’t pants at all.

“Thanks to the Y2K redux that's here to stay (for now) and the viral Attico pants, we can expect to see cargo pockets on everything this spring, from safari shirts to long skirts to utility belts and everything in between,” says Morgan Bienvenue, an NYC-based stylist that specializes in alternative shopping methods such as thrifting, sample sales, and building capsule collections.

What’s more, cargo pants (and pockets) are no longer being pigeonholed to khaki material. “There were many different variations of cargo pants on the runway, including ones made of unexpected fabrics like satin and denim,” says Vivian Lee, Director of Styling at Dailylook. “I'm a big fan of this trend, as it leans toward more functional and practical clothing, and I love the versatility and convenience of a pair of classic cargo pants with multiple pockets for carrying things.” Best of all, they’re versatile. “You can easily dress them up or down, which makes them a closet staple,” Lee says. For what it’s worth: One look at TikTok, where #cargopants has amassed over 1 billion views, proves she has a point.

When it comes to wearing the trend, create eye-catching contrast by pairing the baggy bottoms with a more form-fitting top. To keep it casual, opt for classic cargo material in an of-the-moment color, such as the Veronica Beard Belisa Cargo Pant, sold in women’s sizes 23 to 32. Pair them with a fitted tee and your favorite sneaks for a simple ensemble that’s bound to make a statement nonetheless. For a dressier take on the trend, consider slipping into a pair of Hutch Satin Utility Pants, sold in women’s sizes XXS to XL, worn with a printed top like the Teddy Fresh Digital Print Mesh Mock Neck Top from Urban Outfitters. Finally, for a look that celebrates the utilitarian roots of cargo pants, opt for a trendy take like the Petite Sierra Moleskin Cargo Pant from Banana Republic, available in women’s sizes 00 to 14.

Sequins and Metallics

Once upon a time, sequins and metallics were reserved for New Year’s Eve and other glamorous occasions. Nowadays, the textiles make for shimmering statement pieces that can be worn just as easily during the day as they can at night, no matter the occasion. “Gucci, Rodarte, and Louis Vuitton, amongst many other designer labels, featured glitter, sequins, and metallics for their Spring '23 collections,” Lee says. “Whether you're going for a bohemian look or a more glam aesthetic, sequins and metallics are a great way to add a bit of extra flair to your outfit.”

If you’re open to glitz and glam, there are many ways to wear sequins and metallics. For a more casual take on the trend, try pairing your favorite baggy jeans with the allover sequin Free People Gold Rush Long Sleeve, sold in nine colors in women’s sizes XS to XL. To dress up the trend, treat yourself to one of Retrofête’s many iconic sequin dresses. Our pick? The Gabrielle Sequin Robe, sold in 19 colors in women’s sizes XXS to XXL.

“If you're not comfortable wearing fully-sequined or metallic clothing, try adding accessories to your outfit instead,” Lee suggests. “A statement clutch, shoes, or jewelry will add a touch of shine without being overpowering, and will make a great addition to your wardrobe that can be used on many occasions.” If you decide to take Lee’s less-is-more approach, consider the Nina Shoes Falcon Sequin Bag that comes in nine bold colors, or a pair of the Circus by Sam Edelman Bobbie Sculpted Heels, which are available in seven colors, including this metallic Pink Punch in women’s sizes 5 to 11.

Everything Denim

Denim is a classic staple that’s never really gone out of style but here in 2023, it’s clear that there are so many different ways to style the typically casual textile. “Denim was a key topic in fashion shows all around the world for Spring 2023,” Lee says, referencing Burberry, Chloé, Givenchy, and Jacquemus. “Wide relaxed jeans paired with a cropped denim top, denim one-pieces, denim blazers… you name it, the designers made it.”

To incorporate the reimagined denim trend into your personal style, start by adding a pair of wide-leg or palazzo jeans, like the Good American Good Waist Palazzo Jeans (sold in sizes 00 to 24), to your wardrobe. Alternatively (or additionally), try the denim top trend on for size with the Alice + Olivia Breslin Denim Corset Top, sold in sizes 0 to 14.

Bienvenue expands on the SS23 denim trend, noting that “Thanks in part to our obsession with 2000s style, everyone is experimenting with denim to see just how many ways we can wear it. From acid wash to color washes, from frayed to deconstructed, wearing denim hasn't been this fun in a while.”

The most popular denim style to come off SS23 runways, though? The denim maxi skirt. Shop the Free People Come As You Are Denim Maxi Skirt, sold in five colors in sizes 0 to 14 to try the style on for size. “It can be worn with a simple tee or dressed up with a blouse,” Lee says. “I also personally love a well-fitting denim dress because you throw it on and instantly look put together.” Meanwhile, where the “Canadian Tuxedo” (AKA denim-on-denim) was once mocked, now it’s celebrated and accentuated with details such as feathers and pearls, Lee says. Get your head-to-toe denim fit on lock with the Eloquii Denim Dress with Pocket Detail, sold in sizes 14 to 28.

Balletcore

Keep your look en pointe by rocking the balletcore trend.

With over 413 million views on TikTok, Balletcore is a trend that took off in 2022 and is showing no signs of slowing down in 2023. “The trend is characterized by soft, feminine silhouettes, pastel colors, and delicate fabrics,” Lee says. “Think: soft pinks, corsets and bodysuits, ruffle-adorned clothes, and ballet flats.”

One way to embrace the Balletcore trend, Lee says, is with a bodysuit like the Skims Sculpting Bodysuit with Snaps, tucked into a tulle skirt. Shop the bodysuit in ten colors in women’s sizes XXS to 5X, and then consider the Geisha Designs Sheer Tulle Skirt, sold in three colors in sizes XXS to XL to commit to the look.

Another option? Lee recommends pairing a wrap top such as the Alo Yoga Cropped Escalate Wrap Top with pants or a skirt. “Play with heavily feminine fabrications and soft colors, mixed with must-have ballerina black, and add in classic details like simple flats, thin headbands, and sheer tights,” she says. Shop the Cropped Escalate Wrap Top in women’s sizes XS to L in two colors. Looking to stock up on flats? The Sam Edelman Felicia Ballet Flat, which is sold in 30 colors in women’s whole and half shoe sizes 4 to 13, is an iconic 2010s silhouette that’s recirculating in 2023. “And bring out the leg warmers—those are coming back in soft colors and thin fabrications to wear with shorts or skirts.”

Maxi Skirts

By now, you may have noticed a trend within a trend: Maxi skirts. Whether they’re cargo, denim or tulle, low or high-waisted, Lee assures us that maxi skirts will be everywhere this spring. “Maxi skirt sets that come with a matching top will be fun for spring as you can wear the pieces together or separately,” she adds.

Love the idea of one purchase that can be worn multiple ways? Check out the Free People Easy to Love Set (sold in three colors in sizes XS to XL) or the Lilly Pulitzer Minka Maxi Skirt Set, sold in sizes XXS to XL.

When shopping for maxi skirts, Lee reminds us that no pattern or textile is off limits. As such, don’t be afraid to opt for a bold pattern, like the Farm Rio Off-White Macaw Elegance Maxi Skirt, sold in sizes XS to XL. Shop the matching one-shoulder crop top here.

“As mentioned previously, sequins are one of the trends this spring, so sequin maxi skirts paired with a tee and sneakers make the trend wearable,” she adds. To rock the look, add the Show Me Your Mumu RSVP Skirt (sold in two colors in sizes XS to XXL) to your cart.
