Spider-Man Fans Think Marisa Tomei Is 'Too Hot' To Play Aunt May
Traditionally, Peter Parker’s Aunt May has been a lady of a certain age, often grey haired and mild of manner.
Most recently, she was played by Sally Field opposite Andrew Garfield’s Spidey, but the decision to cast Marisa Tomei opposite new web slinger Tom Holland has caused dismay among fans.
Not because she’s not up to the job… but because she’s “too hot”.
Many took to Twitter to voice their, erm, confusion.
And while some deemed it inappropriate to have a ‘hot’ Aunt May, others put it down to a symptom of Hollywood sexism and ageism.
But as it’s likely that, with Holland at just 19 being the youngest Spider-Man ever, that Tomei, 50, could be around the right age in terms of accuracy to the comics.
Generally, Aunt May, the widow of Peter Parker’s uncle Ben, has been depicted as a grey-haired pensioner, but there have been comics in which she’s been younger, notably in her late 40s and early 50s in the alternative Ultimate Marvel imprint which features re-imagined character from the Marvel world.
It’s thought she may make her first appearance, alongside Holland, in 'Captain America: Civil War’.
But it would seem that, as ever, the comic book fans are a tough bunch to please.
