Southampton 1-1 Man City LIVE! Laporte goal - Premier League result, match stream and latest updates today
Southampton vs Man City LIVE!
Premier League leaders Manchester City were denied a 13th league victory in a row after being held to a 1-1 draw by battling Southampton.
Aymeric Laporte headed a 65th-minute equaliser for Pep Guardiola’s men following a surprise early opener from Saints defender Kyle Walker-Peters.
Kevin De Bruyne struck the post and Gabriel Jesus had a header saved as City piled on the pressure late on and the Southampton defence were pinned back inside their own box.
But there was to be no winner, and it’s the first time they haven’t come out on top in the Premier League since a shock 2-0 loss at home to Crystal Palace way back in late October.
The result leaves the reigning champions 12 points clear of second-placed Liverpool, albeit having played two games more, ahead of a 17-day break from top-flight action.

FULL-TIME
19:25 , Matt Verri
Smacked upfield by Ederson, De Bruyne gets on the end of it and pokes it towards goal... Forster saves with his feet. Corner City.
Corner cleared... and that’s full-time! It finishes 1-1.
Southampton earn a hard-fought point, that’s a brilliant result for them. City’s long winning run is over, but they’re still very much in control of the title race. Laporte’s header earns them what could prove to be a good point.
19:23 , Matt Verri
90+4 mins: Perraud down after a collision with Walker. City have no intention of kicking it out, but the referee stops play,
He’s going to be fine to continue. Two more minutes left...
19:21 , Matt Verri
90+2 mins: Elyounoussi loses it and De Bruyne can lead the break... Elyounoussi charges back and hauls him to the ground. Yellow-card, safe to say the Southampton man did not have eyes on the ball.
Great ball in again, drops to Rodri a few yards out... BLOCKED. And Southampton win the free-kick. That was very nearly a City winner.
19:19 , Matt Verri
90 mins: Silva beats Ward-Prowse to the ball and sets De Bruyne anyway. That is until Salisu has other ideas and wins it back with a perfect tackle.
Six minutes of added time for Southampton to hold on.
19:16 , Matt Verri
88 mins: Grealish with the half-volley in the box, good block. Celebrated like a goal by the Southampton defenders.
Corner worked back to De Bruyne 25 yards out. Low, curling effort, Forster can’t see a thing... just wide of the post to the relief of the Saints’ goalkeeper.
19:14 , Matt Verri
86 mins: Some sustained pressure for Southampton - that hasn’t happened very much at all.
Diallo has space just outside the box and tries his luck, but it’s straight at Ederson and he gathers without any problems.
19:13 , Matt Verri
84 mins: Just over five minutes plus added-time to go. Southampton know that’s going to feel like a lifetime for then.
City’s 12 match winning run in the league very much under threat, despite all of their pressure this half.
19:09 , Matt Verri
81 mins: Once again, Southampton survive. Armstrong with a nervous pat on the referee’s arm, he’s a very relieved man.
Cancelo puts a wonderful ball across the face of goal, Perraud gets his body in well and shuts Jesus down as the Brazilian throws himself at the ball. Runs away to safety.
Armstrong off, Diallo on. Hasenhuttl doesn’t want to risk his side going down to ten men.
19:08 , Matt Verri
80 mins: Busy few minute for VAR... Armstrong with a high, late challenge on Laporte. Free-kick given but it could well be a red card.
Home fans very much not impressed that VAR are getting involved again. Another wait while we watch the slow-motion replays.
19:07 , Matt Verri
79 mins: Still we wait, VAR clearly unsure if the foul is in the area or not. Right on the edge.
NO PENALTY. Southampton survive and on we go.
19:05 , Matt Verri
77 mins: Cancelo has space on the left wing, put in with real pace into the box but it’s just over the head of Silva.
VAR check for a penalty. Salisu and Romeu may have brought down De Bruyne in the box. Long check...
19:04 , Matt Verri
75 mins: A few calmer minutes, Southampton keeping City away from their box. Jesus has made a real difference since coming on, been far more effective than Sterling was.
He shows good strength to hold it up, but Perraud does enough to win it back and clear it upfield.
19:00 , Matt Verri
72 mins: Ball floated to the far post, Jesus is free... Forster just about saves the header with his thigh. Covered the gap well.
Southampton hanging on for dear life, but they’re still level for now.
18:59 , Matt Verri
70 mins: Foden and Jesus combine really nicely, flashed into the box and cleared out to the edge of the box.
De Bruyne controls it, shifts the ball out of his feet and sends a wonderful curling effort crashing against the post! Surely Southampton can’t survive 20 minutes of this.
18:57 , Matt Verri
68 mins: This is desperate stuff now from Southampton.
Drops to Foden into the box, smacks at effort at goal but it’s brilliantly blocked by Salisu. Out to Silva... blocked again! Just constant pressure.
18:55 , Matt Verri
67 mins: All City now, Southampton not able to hold onto the ball at all. Long 25 minutes or so ahead for the home side.
Jesus into the box, low ball towards the penalty spot but Ward Prowse is there to flick it away. It doesn’t stay away for long though, and De Bruyne wins a corner for his side.
GOAL! Southampton 1-1 Man City | Aymeric Laporte 65'
18:53 , Matt Verri
Adams gives away a cheap free-kick, chance for City to put something into the box.
De Bruyne swings it in towards the back post... LAPORTE HEADS IT IN!
City are level, and Southampton will be furious with how they’ve conceded. Simple ball in, simple header, simple equaliser.
18:51 , Matt Verri
63 mins: Armstrong down for Southampton, he’ll need some treatment. Midfielder is back on his feet though and looks fine to continue.
Nearly 20 minutes into the second-half, and the Saints will be delighted. Solid defensively, and still offering a real threat on the break.
18:49 , Matt Verri
61 mins: Jesus’ first touch of the match. Tries to take on Perraud, ends up on the floor and it’s Southampton throw-in.
Perraud very much got the better of Sterling, and it’s a good start to his battle with Jesus.
18:47 , Matt Verri
59 mins: Grealish brought down, just as he was looking to play Foden clean through. Eventually comes to Foden anyway, but his shot is blocked.
Walker-Peters bursts down the right, Cancelo tackles him and City come again. Rodri with the curling effort from just outside the box... flicks off the roof of the net. Not far away.
First City change - Sterling off, Jesus on.
18:46 , Matt Verri
57 mins: Bernardo Silva with a nice flick around the corner to Walker. He’s been much quieter than usual, the midfielder.
Foden gets a shot away, catches it really well but Forster makes a solid save. Comfortable enough for the goalkeeper.
18:43 , Matt Verri
54 mins: Southampton hit the post!
Again the corner is whipped in perfectly, the ball loops up and Broja heads at goal as Ederson comes rushing out. Beats the goalkeeper to it... headers bounces onto the post and away.
Hosts inches away from doubling the lead.
18:41 , Matt Verri
53 mins: Salisu has been really impressive this evening and once again he’s in the right place.
Sterling pokes it forward into the box towards Walker, Salisu is there to clear.
Southampton break and Broja is causing Laporte real problems. The centre-back can’t keep up with him... gets back brilliantly to slide in and block the shot though.
18:38 , Matt Verri
50 mins: De Bruyne pounces on a loose ball and he bursts forward down the left. Plays it inside to Foden, who swings it out towards Sterling but Armstrong gets back to head it behind for another corner.
Foden doesn’t take it short this time, floated at the back post. Laporte wins it, but can’t direct the header.
18:36 , Matt Verri
48 mins: Both sides fired up after the break, end-to-end.
Rodri cushions a volley at goal from the edge of the box, Forster puts it behind for a corner. De Bruyne then clips a delightful ball in towards the far post, crucial flick away from Southampton with Laporte ready to head home.
18:35 , Matt Verri
47 mins: Nearly 2-0 within a minute of the restart!
Corner Southampton, and as usual it’s a perfect ball in from Ward-Prowse. So much pace on the ball, Bednarek gets the flick on but Ederson’s reflexes are good enough to parry it out.
18:33 , Matt Verri
Elyounoussi on, Redmond off at the break. Won’t change Southampton’s shape.
Back underway for the second half!
18:27 , Matt Verri
First-half stats for you...
75% of possession for City, no surprise considering Southampton took the lead so early.
Just one shot on target for each team.... City have looked dangerous but they haven’t created many clear-cut chances. You’d imagine that will change after the break.
Sterling had to equalise..
18:25 , Matt Verri
Biggest chance of the match for Man City fell to Raheem Sterling.
Phil Foden did brilliantly to play it across the face of goal, and Sterling hit it in pretty much the one place that Forster could save it. Anywhere else and it was 1-1.
Raheem Sterling can't believe he's missed...😳
Manchester City should be level but Fraser Forster gets in the way of the shot! ⛔ pic.twitter.com/dVjn84QkN4— Sky Sports Premier League (@SkySportsPL) January 22, 2022
How Southampton took the lead...
18:21 , Matt Verri
That is sensational. 🔥

HALF-TIME
18:18 , Matt Verri
Southampton 1-0 Man City
Cancelo gets to the byline, this is really dangerous... pull-back bobbles into the path of Forster and he dives onto it.
That’s half-time. Southampton have the lead, thanks to Walker-Peters’ early strike. It could have been two, but Broja was denied by the offside flag.
City have pushed for an equaliser and should have had it through Sterling, but his shot was saved from close-range by Forster.
18:16 , Matt Verri
45 mins: Sterling is being closed down so quickly. Again it falls to him on the edge of the box, but before he can get a shot away there are three Southampton shirts surrounding him and closing down the space.
Two minutes of added time to be played.
18:15 , Matt Verri
44 mins: Rodri wide to Walker, and he drills it into the box first-time into a great area. Forster gets down well to gather it though.
Hasenhuttl barking his players, desperately trying to get them in their shape in these couple of minutes of the half.
18:12 , Matt Verri
41 mins: Cancelo’s ball into the box is a decent one, headed out to the edge of the box. De Bruyne is running onto it and goes to shoot, but Redmond does enough to put him under pressure and the Belgian swings at thin air.
Foden then plays a clever reverse pass through to Sterling, Salisu out to close him down. Just a few minutes left for Southampton to hang on, to get to the break in front.
18:09 , Matt Verri
39 mins: Grealish lays it back to Foden and he drifts into the six-yard box, but the shot from a tight angle is blocked.
Sterling must score... DOESN’T! It’s a huge chance for the City winger but he’s fluffed his lines. Foden does wonderfully to play it low across the face of goal, and from six-yards out Sterling has hit it straight at Forster. Anywhere else and it was 1-1.
18:07 , Matt Verri
37 mins: Nearly for Southampton, who are still posing a threat on the counter. It opens up straight through the middle for Armstrong, but the pass has too much on it.
Not entirely convincing from Laporte, who shanks a clearance back to Ederson. Nothing shanked about that from the Brazilian, who boots it all the way through to Forster at the other end of the pitch.
18:05 , Matt Verri
35 mins: As close as City have come.
Another corner, another short corner. Eventually comes back to Sterling on the right, he chops into the box and sends a curling effort towards the far corner. Just over the bar. Not far away at all from finding the top corner, and Forster barely moved.
18:03 , Matt Verri
33 mins: Grealish isn’t happy, has to be held back as he tries to confront Romeu. Ward-Prowse trying to calm things down.
Bednarek goes into the book, it was a dreadful challenge from him on Grealish that started the frustrations. Romeu then had a few words with Grealish, accusing the City man of making the most of the contact, which Grealish didn’t appreciate.
Bednarek is lucky that’s only yellow, was such a poor tackle.
18:01 , Matt Verri
31 mins: Southampton bring it forward, but they’re happy to slow the pace down and just keep the ball. Worked all the way back to Bednarek and Salisu.
Perraud then cuts it back towards the edge of the box... where only De Bruyne is waiting. Not what the left-back had in mind.
17:59 , Matt Verri
29 mins: City are lucky this is still only 1-0!
Broja has it in the box, goes round Ederson and it looks like the Brazilian brings him down... offside flag up again. The goalkeeper was in real trouble if that flag hadn’t have gone up.
17:58 , Matt Verri
28 mins: City starting to build some pressure. Foden plays it through to Grealish, and he takes on Salisu and gets past him. Forster turns the cross behind for a corner.
Comes out to Cancelo from distance, he can’t resist and lets fly from 25 yards out. Well over the bar.
17:56 , Matt Verri
26 mins: Perraud 2-0 Sterling.
The left-back brings the ball down, and then has to hold onto it as Sterling puts him under real pressure. A little too keen though, is Sterling, as he gives away another free-kick.
Great battle between those two already.
GOOOO.... OFFSIDE!
17:54 , Matt Verri
24 mins: Southampton think they have a second, but the offside flag denies them!
Romeu plays Broja in, it’s a lovely first touch and the striker is clean through. Good strength to hold off Walker and then finishes past Ederson really well... all for nothing.
It was a great finish from Broja, deserved for it to count!
17:51 , Matt Verri
21 mins: Forster gets his team up the pitch from a goal-kick, sends it long. Broja and Adams both go up for the same header though.
Perraud knocks it past Sterling on the left, and he wins a free-kick as the Englishman wrestles him away from the ball.
17:50 , Matt Verri
19 mins: Southampton press City high, back to Ederson. He’s not one to panic though and he calmly sweeps it out to Dias.
Silva then tries to float a ball over the top as De Bruyne makes a nice run, but it’s blocked. Saints looking very secure in their shape.
17:48 , Matt Verri
17 mins: That was very nearly the opening for the visitors though.
Lovely ball from De Bruyne to cut the Southampton defence open, and Cancelo gets to the byline. He’s stretching to keep it in, and the cross into the box is straight at Forster.
17:46 , Matt Verri
15 mins: Southampton’s record from a winning position is not the best, they’ve dropped plenty of points after taking the lead.
Been a solid enough response to going ahead here though, City haven’t created anything yet.
17:44 , Matt Verri
13 mins: Patient as ever from City, keeping it on the edge of the Southampton box. Eventually Walker whips in a low cross, volleyed away by Salisu.
Silva drives forward dangerously, out to Sterling. His pass back to the Portuguese midfielder is overhit, out for a goal-kick.
17:41 , Matt Verri
10 mins: This will test Southampton’s pre-match plan to stay on the attack. Will be very tempting for them to now just sit off.
Grealish caught late, free-kick for City. He’s staying down holding his ankles after that challenge.
GOAL! Southampton 1-0 Man City | Kyle Walker-Peters 7'
17:38 , Matt Verri
SOUTHAMPTON LEAD!
WOW. He brings it forward on the right and lays it wide to Redmond. Cut back to Walker-Peters in the box... one touch to bring it down, the second to curl it into the far corner with the outside of his foot.
What a brilliant finish!
17:37 , Matt Verri
7 mins: City so nearly click into top gear, brilliant move.
Foden and Grealish combine on the left, it’s worked out to the other wing where Sterling has plenty of space. Walker bombing forward on the overlap... tame pass from Sterling.
17:36 , Matt Verri
5 mins: Even Ward-Prowse won’t go for goal here though, a long way out.
Floated into the box, Salisu gets on the end of it but his header loops straight to Ederson. Early sign of the Saints’ threat from set-pieces though.
17:34 , Matt Verri
4 mins: Bednarek out of defence well, ball came through towards De Bruyne but the defender is quickly out to close down the Belgian.
Hasenhuttl said pre-match he wanted Southampton to have at least 35% of possession... they haven’t had 5 touches yet.
That’s better though, Adams nips in to win it and Dias brings him down.
17:32 , Matt Verri
2 mins: City on top right from kick-off, Grealish winning the first free-kick of the match.
They follow it with the first corner, but Southampton deal with it well and clear the danger.
KICK-OFF!
17:30 , Matt Verri
Here we go then.... KICK-OFF!
We are underway at St Mary’s. Can the Saints do anything to stop the City machine?
17:22 , Matt Verri
Just a few minutes now until the players come out onto the pitch.
Hasenhuttl has insisted his side will not just sit back this evening, they want to cause City problems. We will soon see whether that materialises out there...
Guardiola: Nobody is champions in January
17:18 , Matt Verri
Pep Guardiola has downplayed suggestions that the title race is done, despite Man City’s huge gap at the top of the table.
“We are going to drop points, we are going to lose games,” the City boss said.
“It’s how you react in that moment. It’s normal - when we win 12 games in a row, people start to think we are invincible. That’s not true.
“We are going to drop points, hopefully not today, but it’s going to happen.
“We’re in the last week of January, no-one is champions. It remains incredibly tough.”
Hasenhuttl’s pre-match thoughts:
17:09 , Matt Verri
“They are very used to playing against deep defending teams, they always find solutions and it is hard to defend like that.
“We want to make it active, don’t hide. We want to play brave like we always do, I think that’s what we’re known for.
“It’s what makes us successful sometimes against the big teams. This is what we’ll try.”
Big day for Romeu...

Reasons for Southampton to be confident...
16:47 , Matt Verri
The Saints haven’t lose at home since Wolves edged past them back in Southampton, so it’s a formidable St Mary’s record that they boast.
When these sides met earlier in the season at the Etihad, it finished goalless at the Etihad as the visitors earned an impressive point. City had 16 shots that day, but just one on target.
Add all that up, and there’s certainly some hope for Southampton this evening against the all-conquering City team.

Just under 10 minutes to go until we get all the team news.
We know Mahrez won’t be involved for City, but beyond that it’s very difficult to know what Guardiola will do with his side!
Guardiola: Ward-Prowse best free-kick taker in the world
16:12 , Matt Verri
Pep Guardiola is fully aware of the threat that James Ward-Prowse gives Southampton from set-pieces.
The Saint captain scored a stunning 35-yard free-kick against Wolves last time out, and the City boss was full of praise for the midfielder’s ability.
“He’s the best taker right now worldwide,” Guardiola said.
“There isn’t a better taker than Ward-Prowse. He’s so good at it that maybe you miss his quality as a player as well.
“He is a guy who adapts in midfield positions, a team player who has great quality with or without the ball. At free-kicks, corners, he is exceptional.”
Prediction
16:00 , Matt Verri
The Saints have certainly caused City problems before but it’s hard to look past the champions given their recent form. It looks likely Guardiola’s side will finish the day 14 points clear at the top of the table.
Man City to win, 2-1.
Man City team news
15:45 , Matt Verri
Nathan Ake is back for City having missed their recent win over Chelsea but Oleksandr Zinchenko is still unavailable.
Riyad Mahrez’s time at the Africa Cup of Nations may be over but the Algerian has been given a week off to recharge his batteries before he returns to the pitch for City.
Southampton team news

Both Theo Walcott and Mohamed Elyounoussi are in contention for the Saints this evening.
