Southampton 1-2 Liverpool LIVE! Matip goal - Premier League result, match stream and latest updates today

Southampton vs Liverpool LIVE!

Liverpool ensured the Premier League title race will go to the final day of the season by coming from behind to beat Southampton 2-1 at St Mary’s.

Joel Matip’s crucial second-half winner moved the Reds a single point behind leaders Manchester City to set up a tantalising finale on Sunday.

Jurgen Klopp’s men knew they had to be victorious on the south coast to remain in contention to become top-flight champions for only the second time in 32 years and were stunned by Nathan Redmond’s superb solo opener.

But the much-changed visitors controlled proceedings for almost the entire evening and levelled through former Saints loanee Takumi Minamino before Matip completed the turnaround with the aid of a deflection off Kyle Walker-Peters.

The Reds, who remain in contention for an unprecedented quadruple, will welcome Wolves to Anfield in five days’ time, hoping Steven Gerrard’s Aston Villa can do them a major favour away to City.

Match report

22:35 , Matt Verri

Liverpool took the Premier League title race to the final day of the season after coming from behind to beat Southampton 2-1 at St Mary’s.

Manchester City may have considered getting the party poppers out when Nathan Redmond put the Saints in front - defeat for Liverpool would have confirmed Pep Guardiola’s side as champions.

They will have to wait for that though, as Takumi Minamino drew the visitors level before the break and Joel Matip then put them in front in the second-half.

It leaves City one point clear at the top of the table, with a goal difference that is six better than Liverpool’s. Aston Villa travel to the Etihad on Sunday, while Jurgen Klopp’s side host Wolves.

Liverpool fans will be very relieved to hear Klopp’s comments on Gomez, who was forced off with injury at half-time.

Klopp confirms that while the defender is in pain, they believe it’s not too serious and Gomez has escaped serious injury.

Jordan Henderson’s post-match thoughts

22:07 , Matt Verri

“The aim was to take it to the end. We knew it would be difficult. A lot of changes. The lads were brilliant. They kept going right to the end and got the reward.

“We’ve done that really well all season, the lads who haven’t played as much as they’d like took their opportunity. You need everyone in a Premier League season.

“We’re so used to it. We’re constantly in cup finals every game. It’s normal. You get on with it. We can all celebrate or relax at the end of the season after the Champions League final.”

James Milner gives his reaction

21:55 , Matt Verri

“The guys are incredible. The guys who may not have played as much but you see it in training every day the level they put in and you can see it when they need to step up.

“It is a special group of players and a special football club. We fight to the end and keep going. All we can do is take it as far as we can.

“It shows how ready everyone is, how ready they are mentally. It is special and that starts right from the top with the manager.”

21:52 , Matt Verri

Southampton players doing a lap of the pitch with their families, after the final home game of the season.

There are more players on the pitch than in the stands - home fans not particularly keen to stick around.

All to play for

21:48 , Matt Verri

Premier League title race, relegation battle, race for Champions League and Europa League spots...

Still plenty to play for all throughout the table on the final day. Set up to be a thriller on Sunday!

21:42 , Matt Verri

Liverpool close to within a point of Manchester City then. They host Wolves on Sunday, while Man City welcome Aston Villa to the Etihad.

Jurgen Klopp’s side need City to drop points, otherwise there’s nothing they can do.

FT: Southampton 1-2 Liverpool

The title race is going to the final day!

Liverpool with nine changes but they do just about enough to get the job done, as Matip gets the winner.

90 minutes to go in the season and it’s still to be decided.

21:35 , Matt Verri

90 mins: Southampton have burst into life at long last, winning a corner as we tick into stoppage time. Or not - foul given.

Three minutes added time. Will be more than that, as Milner goes down with cramp.

21:33 , Matt Verri

89 mins: Redmond trying to inject some pace... cuts inside and fires at goal, which Alisson collects at the second time of asking.

Southampton try and keep the attack going, Adams can’t control Lyanco’s ball forward though. Saints fans continue to urge their side forward.

21:30 , Matt Verri

85 mins: Lyanco gets incredibly lucky - tries to flick it over Origi on the edge of the box and the Liverpool striker wins it back.

He would have been clean through on goal but the referee decides Origi had fouled Lyanco. Minimal contact.

21:27 , Matt Verri

83 mins: More boos and now more changes. Keita on for Firmino, while Southampton bring on Adams for Broja.

Liverpool fans in fine voice, as you’d expect. Their side has made nine changes but looks set to take the title race to the final day.

21:25 , Matt Verri

81 mins: Liverpool still getting as much time as they want on the ball in defence and midfield. No need for Henderson to rush anything - Southampton fans trying to urge their side forward, boos ringing out.

It would be fair to say St Mary’s is unimpressed with the intent.

21:23 , Matt Verri

78 mins: Bit more space in the game now, as Southampton commit bodies forward. Still not massively going for it though.

Very much easier said than done!

Title race on?

21:20 , Matt Verri

21:17 , Matt Verri

73 mins: Are we going to see some attacking now from Southampton?

Lovely cross from Redmond into a dangerous area, Tsimikas well positioned though and puts it out for a corner. Better from the Saints!

21:15 , Matt Verri

70 mins: Milner with a great tackle on Elyounoussi - hurts himself in the process but doesn’t look too serious.

Diallo and Tella off for Southampton, Romeu and Armstrong on. Armstrong of the Stuart variety, that is.

GOAL! Southampton 1-2 Liverpool | Joel Matip 67'

21:12 , Matt Verri

LIVERPOOL TAKE THE LEAD!

It’s been coming for about 67 minutes. Another corner for Liverpool and this time they make it count.

Tsimikas swings it in, Elyounoussi flicks it on into his own box and Matip sticks his head at it... flies into the corner.

21:09 , Matt Verri

65 mins: Second Liverpool sub of the night, Origi on to replace Elliott.

A man for big goals of the bench. Can he do it again?

21:09 , Matt Verri

64 mins: Ball through to Ward Prowse, who is in as Henderson steps up trying to play offside.

Overhit though, Alisson off his line and calmy sets Liverpool away on the attack again. Firmino tries his luck from outside the box, straight at McCarthy.

21:06 , Matt Verri

62 mins: Everything good from Liverpool is coming through Firmino.

It’s another lovely flick through, this time to Jones. He tries to bend it low round the bodies, never going to be coming back that much though.

Half-hearted appeals for a penalty as Jota ends up on the ground - even the Liverpool fans didn’t really commit.

21:03 , Matt Verri

59 mins: Yet another Liverpool corner. They haven’t made the most of these at all so far.

Milner drags it low out to the edge of the box, where Elliott scuffs it straight into a mass of bodies. Add that onto the list of set-pieces that have come to nothing - it’s a long one.

21:00 , Matt Verri

56 mins: Liverpool continue to pile the pressure on!

Firmino has been sensational tonight and he slides the ball through to Elliott. Tight angle, lifts it over McCarthy but into the side-netting.

Southampton just about survive once again.

20:58 , Matt Verri

54 mins: Messy in the Southampton box but it almost works for Liverpool. Henderson bundles it forward, Firmino flicks it through to Jota - just cleared before he can get the shot away.

Liverpool corner, headed away and Southampton can break. Ward-Prowse tries to curl a pass through to Elyounoussi, straight at Alisson though.

20:55 , Matt Verri

51 mins: Ball lofted over the Liverpool backline, Milner clumsily brings down Broja. Free-kick for Southampton - surely too far out even for Ward-Prowse.

Looks like he’s going to give it a go though. He does - full power, minimum accuracy. Straight into the wall at shin height.

20:53 , Matt Verri

49 mins: CLOSE!

Tsimikas bursting forward again on the left. Cuts it back to Jota, gets the shot away quickly but it’s dragged just wide of the far post.

Not a particularly bold prediction to say a Liverpool goal is coming if it stays like this.

20:52 , Matt Verri

47 mins: Henderson already heavily involved for Liverpool, getting plenty of the ball.

He sends a long pass over the top for Tsimikas, but it skips off the pitch and behind for a goal-kick. More of the same after the break - no increased ambition from Southampton.

Back underway!

20:49 , Matt Verri

Here we go again.

Gomez off at the break, with Henderson replacing him. Milner shifts to right-back.

20:45 , Matt Verri

As it stands, Man City would be three points clear going into the final day of the season with a goal difference that is seven better than Liverpool’s.

Guardiola’s side would very much take that!

20:39 , Matt Verri

Liverpool with 12 shots in that first half, three on target. 73% of possession too as Southampton sat right off.

The hosts managed just one shot in the half - Redmond’s goal. Clinical if you’re generous...

HT: Southampton 1-1 Liverpool

20:34 , Matt Verri

And that’s half-time. Liverpool will decide at the break what to do with Gomez - may well be the end of his night.

The visitors by far the better team in the first 45 minutes and have dominated the match, but it’s level. Minamino equalised for the visitors after Redmond’s wonderful opener.

 (PA)
(PA)

20:32 , Matt Verri

45+1 mins: Concern for Liverpool as Gomez goes down and Matip kicks the ball out so he can get some treatment.

Diallo fell awkwardly on him - knee being stretched out.

20:30 , Matt Verri

45 mins: Two minutes added on at the end of the first-half.

It feels like quite a while since anything happened. Stephens tries to change that by gifting possession back to Liverpool, Elliott is closed down quickly before he can pick out a teammate.

20:27 , Matt Verri

42 mins: Long, long spell of Liverpool possession. Probing down the left, Tsimikas lays it back to Jones.

He tries a cute ball through to Jota... so cute that nobody in a yellow shirt knew it was coming. Southampton will get a touch of the ball!

20:24 , Matt Verri

39 mins: No pressure at all on the Liverpool centre-back pairing when they have the ball - even Milner is getting on it at will.

Long ball forward from Redmond, Broja does well to try and force something out of it. The best he can do is a Liverpool throw-in though.

20:22 , Matt Verri

36 mins: Tsimikas considers going for goal, then changes his mind and opts to cross... ends up doing something in between.

Diallo then gives it straight back though and Firmino tries his luck from distance. Always rising over the bar.

20:19 , Matt Verri

34 mins: NEARLY FOR LIVERPOOL!

Elliott plays a lovely cross into the near post, Firmino gets there and flicks it on across the face of goal... Lyanco there to put it behind before Jota can have a tap-in.

Southampton head it away, they’ve dealt with corners well on the whole.

How Liverpool equalised...

20:18 , Matt Verri

20:16 , Matt Verri

31 mins: Southampton do press up the pitch this time and Liverpool swiftly play it through them.

Comes to Jota, he gets to the byline and wins a corner for the visitors. That’s the danger of pushing up for the Saints!

20:14 , Matt Verri

29 mins: That goal had certainly been coming, Southampton have been struggling to get out with any sort of regularity.

Milner goes for goal from miles out, dipping effort that McCarthy just parries away.

GOAL! Southampton 1-1 Liverpool | Takumi Minamino 27'

20:12 , Matt Verri

MINAMINO SCORES ON ST MARY’S RETURN!

Gomez fires the ball in to Jota and Salisu misses as he dives at it. Jota then lays it off for Minamino, who absolutely hammers it into the top corner at the near post.

20:11 , Matt Verri

26 mins: Tella with a big switch out to Walker-Peters, who does really well to keep it in.

Can’t do any more than though - Jones across and wins it back before the full-back can find a red and white shirt.

20:09 , Matt Verri

24 mins: Defending becoming a bit frantic from Southampton, perfectly proved by Lyanco who takes a wild slash at the ball and slices it out for a throw-in.

Liverpool putting plenty of crosses into the box, Saints just hammering it upfield at every opportunity.

Brilliant from Redmond

20:08 , Matt Verri

20:06 , Matt Verri

21 mins: Elyounoussi gets in behind the Liverpool defence again. Lays it back to Ward-Prowse who clips in the cross towards Redmond... headed out.

Visitors dominating possession but they do look vulnerable when Southampton counter.

GOOO.... OFFSIDE!

20:04 , Matt Verri

Liverpool have the ball in the back of the net but the offside flag is up.

Free-kick whipped in, Firmino heads in at the back post but the linesman is there to deny him. Klopp was well underway in his celebrations too.

20:03 , Matt Verri

18 mins: Better from Liverpool. Firmino slides the ball through to Jota in the box, Lyanco quickly across to put it behind for a corner.

Milner takes, headed out to Elliott who tries his luck. Blocked. Falls to Tsimikas and guess what? Blocked again.

20:01 , Matt Verri

16 mins: Southampton midfield doing a brilliant job of intercepting passes being played through by Matip and Konate.

Broja and Elyounoussi finding space down the flanks too - after a slow start, it’s been impressive from the Saints.

GOAL! Southampton 1-0 Liverpool | Nathan Redmond 13'

19:58 , Matt Verri

SOUTHAMPTON TAKE THE LEAD!

Well, well, well. Liverpool want a free-kick in the build-up after a challenge on Jota, not going to get it though.

Lyanco brings it forward and Southampton work it out to Redmond on the right. He cuts inside past Gomez and fires it into the far corner... wonderful finish.

19:55 , Matt Verri

10 mins: Konate back up for the visitors.

From nowhere Southampton find themselves on the attack as Broja is set away down the right. He has Redmond free if he looks up, skips past Matip and goes for goal himself though. Alisson rushes off his line to smother.

Much better from the Saints. Ward-Prowse plays it over the top for Walker-Peters, Liverpool scramble it clear.

19:53 , Matt Verri

8 mins: No Robertson or Alexander-Arnold to take the corner, and no Van Dijk to aim for.

Tsimikas swings it in instead, Southampton clear. Play stopped as Konate is down with a head injury - looks in a fair bit of pain, got caught by Salisu.

19:52 , Matt Verri

7 mins: Southampton lose the ball on the halfway line and Elliott can bring the visitors forward.

Eventually played out to the edge of the box, Milner clips it towards Jota... blocked. Liverpool stay on the attack and win a corner, the first of the match.

19:50 , Matt Verri

5 mins: Low-key start to the match, no real pace in it. Matip and Konate getting all the time in the world on the ball, Southampton with everyone back in their own half.

Gomez looks to play the ball down the line for Minamino, too much on it though and it runs out of play.

19:47 , Matt Verri

2 mins: Very early moments would suggest that Redmond will be getting right back for the hosts, effectively a left wing-back.

That may change in possesson - for now we won’t know that, Liverpool enjoying all of the ball.

KICK-OFF!

19:45 , Matt Verri

We are underway at St Mary’s!

19:41 , Matt Verri

Players are in the tunnel, kick-off just a few moments away.

Big night for Liverpool - can they take the title race to the final day of the season?

19:37 , Matt Verri

Klopp has also described Firmino as ‘one of the best strikers in the world’ in his pre-match comments.

Glowing praise. With no Salah, Mane or Diaz, now really is the time for the Brazilian to step up for Liverpool.

What Klopp has had to say...

19:30 , Matt Verri

“There were things to consider. First and foremost, it was clear from the beginning what we need here for this game, in the situation Southampton is, with the point they have to prove, with the results they had against other top-six teams.”

Warm-ups underway!

19:24 , Matt Verri

Joel Matip’s pre-match thoughts

19:17 , Matt Verri

“We had to put some fresh legs in, but we are confident, we have the quality and we have to fight for every situation.

“We just have to play our own game, because it will be a hard challenge tonight. We concentrate on our things and after that we will see.”

19:08 , Matt Verri

Pennaud’s absence explained - the left-back has suffered a leg fracture.

Not entirely clear how Southampton will line up in his absence. Could be a back three, could be Stephens at RB and Kyle Walker-Peters at LB, could be Walker-Peters at RB and Salisu at LB.

Basically it could be anything.

Much-changed visitors have arrived!

19:02 , Matt Verri

18:54 , Matt Verri

Nine changes for Liverpool from the side that won at Wembley on Saturday - only Konate and Alisson keep their places.

Alexander-Arnold, Van Dijk, Salah and Mane miss out on the squad entirely, with Klopp taking no chances when it comes to fitness.

Changes too for Southampton, including McCarthy and Stephens coming into the side. Looks like Salisu could be starting at left-back.

Liverpool continue fight on all fronts

18:17 , Matt Verri

Liverpool might arrive at St Mary’s tired, but they’ll also arrive full of confidence.

They lifted the FA Cup over the weekend after victory over Chelsea on penalties gave the Reds their second trophy of the season.

With a Champions League final to come, the quadruple hopes are relying on a Man City slip-up in the league.

Here’s how Liverpool made it another successful trip to Wembley on Saturday...

Klopp: We have to be really careful

18:11 , Matt Verri

Jurgen Klopp is expecting a tough game for Liverpool tonight, admitting he has no choice but to make changes to try and navigate a hectic fixture list.

“This is now game [61], so we have to be really careful, that’s clear,” Klopp said.

“We don’t finish the season tomorrow, that’s not our last game of the season. That would, again, be different.

“When did Southampton have their last game before they play tomorrow? I think it was 10 or 12 days…long. So it’s completely different.

“OK, they might lack a little bit of rhythm, but if we make changes we lose that advantage of having rhythm as well. They are completely fresh. We cannot go there and fall into this game like ‘oh my god, what’s going on here?’.”

Prediction

17:53 , Matt Verri

There have been so many twists and turns in this title race, and Southampton were able to take points off City earlier in the season.

But Liverpool’s tails will be up and they will surely have the motivation to seal a victory on the south coast, even with a few key men missing.

A 3-1 Liverpool win.

Liverpool team news

17:40 , Matt Verri

Liverpool, meanwhile, will be without both key stars Mohamed Salah and Virgil van Dijk for tonight’s clash.

“They are both okay,” assured Klopp on Monday. “The target for both would be that they would be involved again at the weekend [against Wolves].”

Fabinho is also out despite the manager saying he was “progressing very well” in his recovery from a hamstring issue.

Predicted Liverpool XI (4-3-3): Alisson; Alexander-Arnold, Matip, Konate, Robertson; Keita, Henderson, Thiago; Diaz, Jota, Mane.

Tino Livramento is the chief absentee for Southampton as he continues to recover from a long-term knee injury.

Fraser Forster and Stuart Armstrong face late fitness tests and would be big boosts for the Saints, as they look for a shock win in front of their home fans to end a dismal run of form.
