South Korea's 'Garlic Girls'

The South Korean women’s curling team has taken the PyeongChang Olympics by storm, not just for their prowess on the ice, but for the catchy nicknames the women have adopted. The group of women who are known popularly as the “Garlic Girls” all share the common Korean last name of Kim. (Getty)

Although they all share a common last name, only two of the women, Kim Kyong-ae and Kim Yong-mi, are actually sisters. To make it easy for fans to differentiate them from one another, the women have adopted nicknames based on the breakfast foods they enjoy. (Getty)

The team’s nickname, “Garlic Girls, ” stems from the town they all hail from in the Gyeongsangbuk-do province, an area that’s known for it’s many garlic farms. (ap)

Internet-famous for her game face and owl-size glasses, the team’s skip Kim Eun-jung goes by the nickname “Annie,” after a brand of yogurt. (Getty)

One of the only two actual sisters on the team, Kim Yeong-mi goes by the nickname, “Pancake.”
