South Carolina’s Marcus Satterfield drops in to see in-state quarterback

It’s no secret that South Carolina head coach Shane Beamer and quarterbacks coach Marcus Satterfield covet Dylan Lonergan of Snellville, Georgia as the quarterback in their 2023 recruiting class.

Lonergan will take an official visit to USC next month. The Gamecocks are competing with Alabama, Stanford and Ohio State for the talented two-sport star, and nothing is a given. Because of that, the recruiting of other quarterbacks in the class must continue.

One prospect Satterfield has been watching is LaNorris Sellers (6-3, 217) of South Florence. Satterfield was on hand to watch South Florence practice last Friday. Sellers was once committed to Virginia but dropped that after the coaching change. He currently is committed to Syracuse but is open to hearing from the Gamecocks.

“They are very interested and stuff. They just keep in touch with me right now,” Sellers said. “Basically, they are saying be patient and keep doing what I’m doing. I’m honestly focusing on Syracuse, really, and if anything does come along, we’ll cross that bridge when it gets here.”

Sellers saw his season cut short in 2021 due to a shoulder injury. As a sophomore he passed for 1,077 yards and 12 touchdowns and rushed for 618 yards and 13 touchdowns. Sellers said Satterfield expressed to him that his skills would work well in his offense.

“He likes how I play, how I can throw it and run it and extend plays when I need to. That’s really it,” Sellers said.

Sellers said he’s also having contact from Appalachian State, Georgia State, Coastal Carolina, Liberty, Virginia Tech, Ohio State and Notre Dame. Ohio State and Notre Dame recruiters were in to see him last week. But the Syracuse commitment is still in place.

“I’m feeling pretty good,” Sellers said. “Coach (Robert) Anae was out there today (Monday). I feel pretty good right now. I have a good relationship with the coaches and all that, so I’m feeling pretty good.”

Sellers has set a June 24 official visit to Syracuse, and that’s the only visit he has on the books for June at this point.

Recruiting news and notes

USC on Monday night offered Dorman offensive tackle D.J. Geth. The Gamecocks are hoping to land both Cavalier tackles as they have long pursued Markee Anderson. Geth (6-6, 310) is the son of former North Carolina basketball player Ed Geth and is just coming into his own in the football recruiting world. He was named the O-line MVP at the recent Palmetto Combine in the Upstate. Some of his other offers include North Carolina, Coastal Carolina, James Madison, Marshall, Liberty Troy, Charlotte, Tulane and Georgia State. This spring he made visits to Clemson, LSU, Louisville and Coastal Carolina.

Defensive tackle Elijah Davis of Wagener-Salley and East Mississippi Community College is home until May 28. He’s planning to take an unofficial visit to USC before he returns to the junior college. Davis said he is in regular contact with Gamecock defensive line coach Jimmy Lindsey, who is making a strong push for him. This summer he is planning to take visits to USC, Alabama and Tennessee. Davis added recent offers from Maryland and Texas. He also has offers from Florida State, Ole Miss, Texas Tech, Virginia Tech, Miami, Auburn and Georgia.

Recruiting has taken a back seat to the discus and the shot put for offensive tackle DJ Chester of McDonough, Georgia. The defending state champion in both events is focused on a repeat and not football offers or visits at this point. That will change once his track season is done. In fact, he plans to name a top 15 on May 27. USC was one of his spring visits and the Gamecocks remain a recruiting fixture with him. Chester said he really likes the Gamecocks and talks to one of their coaches nearly every day. He has also visited Miami, Ole Miss, East Carolina, Mississippi State and Nebraska. Offers continue to come in for Chester who has added to his board. this month Arkansas and Georgia Tech. Some of his other offers are Florida State, Ole Miss, Boston College, Auburn, Maryland, Kansas, Pitt, Michigan, N.C. State, West Virginia, Kentucky and Louisville. He has not yet set any official visits.

Camden DT and USC target Xzavier McLeod set an official visit to LSU for June 16.

USC OT target Elijah Williams was offered by Maryland.
