Someone Might Have Finally Solved the Greatest Mystery From 'The Office'

If any sitcom has a chance to never truly go away, it's The Office. Even though the last episode of the NBC comedy debuted eight years ago, there's always something coming from the fans who miss the Scranton days. Not too long ago, we learned that James Gandolfini almost joined the show after Steve Carell left. Brian Baumgartner still pops up to talk about Kevin's chili spill from time to time. Hell, just the other day, Aaron Rodgers showed up to training camp in a T-shirt inspired by The Office.

You know what else The Office's fans are always chewing on? One of the show's biggest mysteries: The identity of the Scranton Strangler. You'd have to be familiar with, you know, Season Six through Nine of the show to truly get the bit, but here's the gist. In Season Six, Andy Bernard holds up a newspaper that reads, "Scranton strangler strikes again." After that, The Office drops a ton of little jokes about the mystery killer, from Dwight Schrute dressing up as the criminal for Halloween, to Toby Flenderson serving on the jury for his case. The show never IDs the Scranton Strangler, but fans have long theorized that it's either Creed Bratton (the show implied that the dude has killed before), Toby (mental breakdown after Pam and Jim get together), or Andy (anger problems).

Now, we might finally have an answer, courtesy of Jules Suzdaltsev. In February 2020, he tweeted his theory that David Wallace — the longtime CFO of Dunder Mifflin — is the Scranton Strangler. Guess who replied a couple days later? Andy Buckley, who played Wallace in The Office.

Now, we're bringing this up because Suzdaltsev just spotted the reply himself, and we couldn't help but let the Dunder Mifflin hive know. Buckley has a point! Wallace was wound pretty tight, unraveled in a way that was overshadowed by all the other things going on at Dunder Mifflin, and would be the perfect left-field reveal of the killer's identity. Hey, maybe a Barry-esque dramedy on the Scranton Strangler is The Office spinoff we've been waiting for all along.
