Somebody keeps lighting fires along a popular SC walking trail. Here’s what to know

The first section constructed of the Swamp Rabbit Trail extends north from downtown Greenville to Travelers Rest along an unused railroad bed.

It is almost as much of a symbol of the rebirth of Greenville as downtown’s Falls Park, which abuts the Reedy River and its waterfall.

Some crime has occurred on the route, but all in all it is a family and community gathering spot that has brought new shops and restaurants and a new 60-acre city park due to open this week called Unity Park.

Now, someone is setting fires.

Six fires were set from April 19 to May 11 in a roughly two mile stretch of the Swamp Rabbit in Travelers Rest, just north of the Furman University golf course and south of the Travelers Rest History Museum.

The Greenville County Sheriff’s Arson Unit investigators say the fires occurred between midnight and into the early morning hours.

Lt. Ryan Flood, spokesman for Greenville County Sheriff’s Office, said Travelers Rest and Duncan Chapel fire departments responded to some of the fires. There was no property damage.

Anyone with information is asked to call Crime Stoppers of Greenville at 23-CRIME.
